Lawrence’s voice caught in his throat, his eyes stinging. “Was it this painful for her too, when she learned the truth?”
Aaron let out a long breath. What Lawrence had done all those years ago was downright cruel. No woman could forgive that easily, unless she was the type to fall for her captor. Theresia definitely wasn’t that kind of person. But Aaron couldn’t just come out and say that.
He tried to sound reassuring. “Lawrence, I’ll be honest, what you did was pretty harsh. But Theresia really does love you. I’ve watched her do everything for you these past three years. She’s just upset right now. Once she’s had time to calm down, I’m sure she’ll come back.”
Lawrence’s eyes flickered with hope. “You really think… she could forgive me?”
Aaron gave him a tight smile and lied through his teeth. “Of course. She loves you so much. Once she’s not angry anymore, she’ll be back with you.”
That tiny spark of hope seemed to bring Lawrence back to life. He clung to it like a lifeline. Theresia loved him, she’d given him everything. That kind of love didn’t just disappear. She was just mad right now. If he proved how much he cared, things could go back to the way they were.
And honestly, if she wanted to avoid him forever, she could have. But instead, she’d shown up in Harrisburg. That had to mean something. She wanted his attention, right? That had to be it. Theresia loved him most of all, and this was her way of letting him know.
Lawrence felt a strange calm settle over him. Now that he knew where she was, he wasn’t letting go.
Back at the club, Theresia found Helena and Hanson already there, chatting about something. When Theresia sat down, Helena looked over, half teasing, half annoyed. “Where’d you go? We’ve been waiting forever.”
Theresia filled them in on what had just happened with Lawrence.
There was a moment of stunned silence. Then, Helena just lost it. “Lawrence has the nerve to ask you to forgive him? Who gave him the confidence to say something that ridiculous? If I was his ancestor, I’d climb out of my grave just to give him a piece of my mind.”
After their little gathering, everyone headed home. Theresia grabbed a ride back to her hotel.
Hanson offered to drop Helena off since it was on his way. On the drive, Helena was quiet, lost in thought. After a while, she spoke up. “Hey, Hanson, let’s throw a party soon. Call it a welcome party for me. Invite all the most eligible guys in Harrisburg.”
Hanson looked puzzled. “What, you looking for a boyfriend?”
Helena rolled her eyes and punched him lightly on the arm. “Not for me. I want to help Theresia meet someone good. Best way to get over someone is to start something new.”
Hanson’s eyes lit up. “Alright, I get it. Leave it to me. We’ll make it happen.”
