The thug couldn’t care less about her, shoving Patti hard so she tumbled onto the floor. “Don’t touch me. You’re only good for a quick fling. Don’t ever contact me again.”
He spat on the ground, buckled his pants, and walked out without looking back.
Now it was just Jared and Patti in the room. Patti scrambled up, panic all over her face. “Jared, please, you have to believe me. I don’t know that guy. He just ripped my clothes off, but nothing happened, I swear…”
Jared looked at her with pure disgust. If it weren’t for the baby she claimed to be carrying, they would have been divorced a long time ago. He never thought she’d do something this shameless.
With a cold glare, Jared pushed her back to the floor. His voice was sharp, his revulsion obvious. “You’re not even pregnant, are you, Patti? You’ve been lying to me this whole time. How can you be so cheap? I must have been out of my mind to give up someone like Pearl for you.”
Tears streaked down Patti’s face, but her shame quickly turned to anger. Pearl. In his eyes, that bitch was some kind of treasure?
Bitterness twisted inside her. Meeting Jared’s hateful stare, she snapped back, “What, do you regret breaking off your engagement with Theresia now? Too bad. There’s no turning back. Theresia would never even give you another look.”
Jared’s eyes went wide. “Say that again, Patti. I dare you.”
Things had gone too far. Jared would never love her again, and Patti was done pretending. “Why wouldn’t I say it? You think you’re that special? If you hadn’t been Theresia’s fiancé, I wouldn’t have even bothered with you.”
Jared lost it. He punched her hard in the stomach.
Patti doubled over in pain, gasping. She heard his furious voice. “We’re done. Expect divorce papers from my lawyer.”
He left her right there and stormed out.
With a last, mocking look, Theresia stood and walked away.
Outside the hotel, Theresia waited by the curb, taking a deep breath, her heart still pounding. If she hadn’t been extra careful when she went to the Baker house, if she hadn’t taken the antidote Helena gave her ahead of time, if she hadn’t shocked Patti with the stun gun after overhearing her call with the thug, today might have ended very differently.
She never wanted to go against the Baker family, but Leila had pushed things too far.
Theresia’s brow knit tighter as she clenched her fists.
Right then, a low-key luxury car pulled up in front of her.
The window slid down, revealing a nearly perfect side profile. A deep, steady voice called out. “Get in.”
