Lawrence didn’t say a word. He just held her tighter, as if letting go would mean losing everything.
Theresia could feel her frustration bubbling up. She forced herself to breathe, gathering her thoughts before trying again. “You knew it was Patti who caused that accident. Three years ago, you found someone to take the blame for her. Now, you’re willing to kill Webb for her. Lawrence, do you love her that much? If you do, then why are you still messing with me?”
Her heart pounded in her chest. She needed him to say something, anything that would make sense of all this. Her hands were cold and sweaty as she gripped her phone, but Lawrence didn’t give her what she wanted.
“Are you jealous, Theresia?”
Jealous? Was he serious? Did he really think she was still the clueless girl from three months ago? That version of her was gone, buried along with all the love she used to have for him.
She didn’t answer directly. “Patti set me up and stole my corneas. I’ll make sure she pays for that. I know she’s your precious one, and you’ll do anything to protect her. So please, just stop getting in my way.”
He stayed quiet. The silence stretched between them until it was almost unbearable. Theresia was just about to give up when, without warning, Lawrence grabbed her phone from her hand.
It happened so quickly she barely registered it. He glanced at the screen. The recording app was still running. In the next instant, he threw the phone to the floor, smashing it. His eyes were cold, but there was a twisted smile on his lips.
“Theresia, I loved you so much. Is this really what you want? For me to die?”
She realized then just how careful he was. There was no tricking a man who’d been living on the edge for years.
Theresia tensed, watching him carefully, ready to defend herself if she had to.
He thought back to when he’d asked her if she still loved Jared, and how she hadn’t really answered. That uncertainty made him feel like he was losing his mind. Theresia was supposed to be Jared’s fiancée. If she hadn’t gone blind, they would probably be married by now, maybe even have kids.
Was that why she couldn’t forgive him? Did she still love Jared and want to get back together with him?
No way. He wasn’t going to let that happen.
His breaths were hot against her cheek, his eyes wild. “Theresia, you’re mine. I won’t let you get back with Jared. Never.”
He leaned in to kiss her, but she reacted fast, slamming her forehead into his nose. The pain took him by surprise, and in that moment, she broke free. Her dark eyes flicked to the wine bottles on the rack nearby.
