Melanie glared at him, utterly exasperated by his stupidity.
In her eyes, a divorced man managing to land a woman like Veronica—someone with stellar family backing and ruthless business acumen—was hitting the absolute jackpot.
She couldn't fathom why he was still hung up on Scarlett, or what he even saw in her.
Marriage was supposed to be a strategic alliance between equals!
He looked back at her with a freezing glare.
"Enough. There's a lot you don't understand."
"From what I can see, you're still completely delusional. Even after being locked up for so long, you haven't learned a single thing. You haven't changed at all!"
"If you keep acting this recklessly, you're going to drag this entire family down with you!"
Melanie hadn't expected that instead of agreeing with her, he would actually have the nerve to lecture her.
Furious, she grabbed the heavy ashtray off the coffee table, winding up to hurl it right at his head.
Clarissa couldn't take it anymore. She stepped in, her voice cracking like a whip.
"That is enough, Melanie!"
"Do you think you and Yardley are still playing house in the backyard? Stop throwing things the second you get mad! He is absolutely right!"
"You seriously need to take a hard look at yourself. You've suffered so many losses, learned so many hard lessons, and it's still not enough?!"
"How long are you going to keep making the exact same mistakes?"
When Clarissa finished her tirade, Melanie's face turned a sickly shade of green.
She pointed a trembling finger between her two siblings.
"You... you two..."
He desperately wanted to end things, but right now, his hands were tied. The massive tourism project he had partnered with Thorne Industries on had hit a wall. Thanks to intense opposition from historical preservationists—led by Julian's grandmother, Madeleine—the project had drawn the scrutiny of major regulatory bodies and was currently frozen. The billions he had already poured into it were completely locked up.
Furthermore, under pressure from Veronica's father, Quentin, he had been coerced into signing a heavily lopsided prenuptial agreement.
If he initiated a divorce now, he would have to pay her an absolutely astronomical settlement.
His hesitation wasn't out of love; it was the sheer, bitter reluctance to take such a catastrophic financial hit.
"There's a lot going on behind the scenes that you don't know about..."
He let out a tired sigh, then shifted the topic. "If you're really determined to join the convent, then go. Maybe one day I'll leave all this behind and join a monastery, too."
Before Clarissa could respond, Corinne suddenly appeared in the doorway.
Hearing his last sentence, Corinne stumbled in shock, bursting through the door and nearly face-planting into the office!
