"Zachary... what... what is this?"
Jacqueline was in a state of sheer, unadulterated shock. She stared at him, her eyes wide with a terror she couldn't articulate.
"Mom, I was going to tell you," Zachary said, his voice steady. "Just sit down. Let me explain."
He gently guided her back onto the bed and, in a remarkably calm, even tone, laid bare the darkest, most agonizing chapter of his life.
He spoke without an ounce of self-pity or anger, as if recounting a story that had happened to a stranger.
To him, those memories belonged to a past life. He had walked through the fire and emerged reborn; the trauma was a ghost he had long since put to rest.
But for Jacqueline, hearing it was a living nightmare. She buried her face in her hands and wept uncontrollably, unable to pull herself out of the devastation of his words.
Zachary watched her quietly.
In his memories, she was a force of nature—a stunning, commanding woman with a mane of jet-black hair, always moving with unstoppable momentum. But the woman sitting before him now had silver threading through her hair. She looked fragile, her movements slower, weighed down by years of grief. It made his chest ache.
"Sean Bishop is a monster!" Jacqueline shrieked, finally finding her voice through the sobs. "He took you away, and then he sold you?! He sold his own flesh and blood! He is absolute scum!"
She trembled with a rage so violent she felt like grabbing a knife and hunting Sean Bishop down herself.
Heartbroken, Jacqueline reached out with shaking hands and carefully rolled both of his pant legs up to the knees, exposing the points of amputation.
