He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 593

Instantly, thick smoke billowed out, completely engulfing the hospital room.

Thinking it was an explosive, Julian reacted on pure adrenaline. In a split second, he tackled Scarlett to the floor, using his entire body as a human shield, pressing her securely against the wall.

Scarlett gasped in shock, suddenly overwhelmed by the sheer force pinning her down. She was entirely enveloped by his broad, muscular frame, her face buried flush against his chest.

Beneath her ear, his powerful heartbeat thudded rapidly against his ribcage. A moment later, his deep voice vibrated above her.

"Thank God. It's just a smoke grenade."

He let out a breath of relief and slowly released her.

As the gray haze began to dissipate, Stellan and the two bodyguards immediately rushed to the bed, forming a protective barrier around Gordon.

But as visibility returned, the doorway was empty. In the chaos, Sylvia had vanished.

"Why the hell would she be carrying a tactical smoke grenade in her purse?" Scarlett muttered, brushing herself off.

Julian shrugged, his expression grim. "Paranoia. She probably knew the walls were closing in and prepared an exit strategy."

He quickly stepped out into the hallway, scanning both directions. It was empty. He walked back in, dialing a number. "She slipped away. Stellan, lock down the exits and find her."

"On it," Stellan nodded, immediately mobilizing his men.
