"Yardley, wait! I'll come to the office with you. There are a few things I need to run by you anyway!"
Veronica quickly called out, scrambling to chase after him, and the two of them disappeared down the hall.
The second their footsteps faded, Melanie angrily kicked the chair next to her.
"Is Yardley seriously still hung up on that bitch? I can't believe he actually defended her just now! It makes me so mad!"
"Impossible! My son isn't that stupid!" Corinne denied sharply. "He's looking at the bigger picture. He's just worried that if this blows up, it will damage the Flynn Group's reputation, which has just started to recover."
"Once things settle down, we'll settle all the old and new scores with Scarlett at once! I refuse to believe that little tramp is untouchable!"
"Aunt Corinne..."
Perhaps the medication was finally kicking in. Sylvia managed to move her swollen lips, forcing out a raspy, painful croak.
Struggling, she raised a weak hand and tugged at Corinne's sleeve.
"I... I can endure this injustice for now. As... as long as Yardley's career is secure... my suffering doesn't matter."
She squeezed the words out one agonizing syllable at a time, looking like the ultimate picture of selfless martyrdom.
"Oh, Sylvia, please don't cry."
Corinne quickly grabbed a tissue and dabbed at her niece's face, her voice dripping with sympathy.
"Yardley has so much on his plate with the company right now, and it's a critical time. Don't you worry. Once he's done, I promise he'll step up and make this right for you."
Sylvia nodded weakly and leaned her head against Corinne's arm.
But despite the saintly words leaving her mouth, the venom festering in her heart had reached an absolute boiling point.
Through Yardley's cold tone and his instinct to shield Scarlett, she could tell. Her Yardley wasn't the same man who used to drop everything to prioritize her needs anymore.
He knew she had been brutally harassed.
He knew the humiliating videos were being mocked by millions online.
He had seen with his own eyes that she had been tortured until she barely looked human.
And yet, his only priority was keeping the peace and avoiding bad press, rather than immediately demanding blood on her behalf.
