He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 727

Elara looked profoundly conflicted. "If what you're saying is true... that is complicated."

Standing behind the broad leaves of the plant, Scarlett dug her nails into her palms.

She thought she had built up an immunity to the toxic sludge the Flynns constantly spewed about her. But hearing terms like "genetic history of cancer" and losing her fertility casually tossed around by a total stranger—spoken with such absolute certainty—felt like a hand crushing her throat. She couldn't breathe.

After a long silence, Elara let out a soft sigh.

"I didn't know any of that, Heidi. But I know Scarlett. I know the kind of person she is."

"We've spent enough time together. I trust her character."

Heidi frowned, her tone sharpening. "Elara, don't let your bleeding heart make you stupid! Being a good person is one thing. Marrying into your family is another! The Crofts are old money. Julian is your only heir. If you let him marry a woman who can't have kids and is genetically destined to die young, how are you going to face your ancestors?"

Elara's voice instantly dropped, radiating cold displeasure. "Continuing the family line is important, but I don't weaponize other people's tragedies. Besides, everything you just said is pure gossip. You have zero proof. Heidi, you've never been one to spread malicious rumors. Why are you suddenly acting like this?"

Heidi choked on her words, her face turning an ugly shade of red. "I am trying to help you! Don't come crying to me when this blows up in your face!"

"I choose my friends based on their hearts, not their fertility," Elara replied, her voice eerily calm but resolute. "I appreciate the concern, Heidi. But you can stop worrying about my family's affairs."

With that, Elara turned to leave—and froze.

She saw Scarlett standing right behind the plant.

Fearing Scarlett was hurting, Elara reached out and grabbed her hands tightly. "I am so sorry, sweetheart. I invited you here to relax, and instead, you got dragged through the mud because I have terrible taste in friends."

Heidi's face darkened completely.

Scarlett just smiled softly. "It's fine. I'm used to it. There is literally no lie too vile for the Flynn family to invent."

"But since I'm already here, and I've heard so much about Heidi's incredible talent... I wouldn't want to miss out. Shall we get started on the flowers?"

Though she didn't say a word about it, Scarlett had already noticed the slightly overweight figure squeezed awkwardly in the narrow gap between the wall and the large floor-standing AC unit.
