Scarlett was pushed to her absolute limit. She was half a second away from grabbing the nearest vase and smashing it directly into Corinne's face.
Before she could, Elara grabbed her hand, stepping between them. She glared at Corinne with pure, unrestrained disgust.
"You are a monster, Corinne."
"A woman almost dies giving birth to your grandchild, and not only do you not care, but you actually use it to invent toxic rumors to destroy her life!"
"And as for the Langley family, the truth about why they vanished from Bay City overnight has never been solved! Where on earth did you get the sick idea that they all died of cancer?!"
Elara's words cracked through the room like a whip, metaphorically slapping the perfectly maintained makeup right off Corinne's face.
Corinne's chest heaved, her eyes darting nervously. "You... you stop putting words in my mouth! I was just trying to do you a favor! I was warning you so your family wouldn't get dragged down by her bad luck! But clearly, you're too stupid to appreciate it, Elara!"
Elara let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
"I know exactly what I'm doing, Corinne. I don't need your 'warnings'."
"The more you try to destroy Scarlett's reputation, the more I want to protect her! You think this makes me look down on her? It makes me want my son to marry her even more, just so I have the legal right to spoil her rotten!"
Elara's protective instincts were blazing. She didn't care who was watching.
Right in front of Corinne and Yardley, she grabbed both of Scarlett's hands and looked her dead in the eye.
"Scarlett, the Croft family couldn't care less about these pathetic rumors. Why don't you just marry Julian?"
"I swear to God, if you marry him, we will throw you the most lavish, extravagant wedding this city has ever seen! We will show all these blind, hateful people exactly how happy and untouchable you are! We'll make them choke on their jealousy!"
"Enough!"
Yardley couldn't take it anymore. He slammed his hand down on the table, the veins in his neck bulging. He glared at his mother, his eyes filled with profound disappointment.
"Mom! Scarlett was my wife! She is the mother of my child! She almost died bringing Dawn into this world, and our family failed her!"
"How could you go around spreading such disgusting lies about her? Do you have no decency left? Is there no line you won't cross?!"
No matter how much Yardley usually defended his mother, in this moment, he was utterly disgusted.
He had warned his family over and over again not to antagonize Scarlett. But his mother kept doing it, dragging his name through the mud and making him look like a complete fool.
"You..." Corinne stared at him, her eyes wide with shock, her finger trembling as she pointed at him. "You are screaming at your own mother over an outsider?!"
