It was early evening, and the city was just beginning to light up. Millions of sparkling lights illuminated the sprawling metropolis, creating a majestic, awe-inspiring tapestry of gold and silver.
"Oh my god, it’s gorgeous," Scarlett breathed. It had been years since she last had the peace of mind to simply sit back and admire the beauty of a foreign city at night.
Seeing the starlight reflected in her wide eyes, Julian smiled softly. "The lights aren't fully on yet. Once it gets darker, the view is even more spectacular. Heston City has a lot of history, full of breathtaking ancient architecture. Culturally and historically, it’s actually very similar to Bay City. Like twin sisters separated by oceans."
Prompted by his words, Scarlett looked closer and realized that the glittering skyline did bear a striking resemblance to the view she used to see from the top floor of the Flynn Group headquarters.
"Once the awards ceremony is over tomorrow, I really want to walk around and study the historic buildings here. They say Eastern and Western architectural styles are completely distinct. It would be amazing to see it in person and compare the differences," she said, her eyes lighting up with genuine passion.
When it came to architecture, Scarlett was in her element. Her love for the craft was practically woven into her DNA. She spoke of historic buildings with the kind of fiery devotion someone might reserve for the love of their life. That pure, unadulterated passion was one of the things Julian admired most about her. It resonated with him deeply, as he carried that exact same reverence for the art in his own blood.
"If you study them closely, you'll find that Eastern and Western architectures share a lot of common ground. They each have their own brilliance," Julian replied naturally. "The tragedy is that our country's rapid development over the last few decades resulted in the destruction of so many historic structures. That loss is what breaks my grandmother's heart the most..."
He trailed off, suddenly realizing he had derailed the conversation. He had intended to use this romantic dinner to bring them closer, yet here he was, sliding right back into shop talk. It was an occupational hazard.
Scarlett’s heart did a violent flip. A voice in the back of her mind whispered that he might be talking about her, but she immediately crushed the thought. She was just flattering herself. Still, a tangled knot of emotions tightened in her chest.
Unable to stop herself, she probed carefully, "Who is it? Do I know her?"
Julian’s lips curved into a faint smile. "You do. She is..."
Before he could finish the sentence, a loud commotion erupted from the entrance of the restaurant, shattering the intimate atmosphere.
