His eyes instinctively swept the room, searching for Scarlett.
She was already running toward him. Seeing the blood pouring from his arm, she didn't hesitate. She ripped off her light jacket and swiftly tied the sleeves into a tight tourniquet above his wound to stop the bleeding.
Using the rest of the fabric, she gently wiped the blood from his skin.
"It’s over, Julian," she whispered softly. "Kane and Heath are finished. It's finally over."
Julian didn't answer. He just stood there, motionless.
Scarlett paused, looking up at his face. His lips were ashen, completely devoid of color.
A second later, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed against her, his body going completely limp from blood loss.
"We need a doctor! Call an ambulance! Now!"
Scarlett screamed, wrapping her arms tightly around his torso to keep him from hitting the floor. She had never seen him so feral and unhinged, nor had she ever seen him this pale and vulnerable.
Looking at his lifeless face, her heart ached as she thought about Kane’s toxic words. If they made her stomach turn, she couldn't imagine how much they had hurt Julian.

Once admitted to the hospital, Julian spiked a dangerous fever.
For an adult to run a fever over 102 degrees was terrifying. It took three grueling days for his temperature to finally break.
Throughout those three days, Scarlett and Elara kept a relentless vigil by his bed. They constantly urged each other to go home and rest, but neither could bring herself to leave.
Julian was Elara’s only child. Though she often nagged him and rarely handed out compliments, he was her entire world.
When she heard he had engaged in hand-to-hand combat with a ruthless drug lord, she practically stopped breathing. She spent those three days in tears, refusing to step foot outside the hospital.
Scarlett’s heart was equally shattered watching him lie there unconscious.
