Veronica's words completely laid her ambitions bare.
Yardley was utterly speechless at first, but then a sudden thought struck him: using Veronica as a pawn wasn't such a bad idea.
He had heard every word of her tirade against his father from outside the door. Though her insults were incredibly blunt, he had to admit that he felt a dark thrill listening to them. As a son, he couldn't say those things himself, but Veronica had no such filter. Letting her tear into Franklin to snap him back to reality might actually do some good.
With that in mind, Yardley remained silent, simply staring at his father with a hardened expression.
Franklin had always been the absolute authority of the Flynn family. Everyone lived at his mercy, breathing only when he allowed it. Yardley had always played the part of the dutiful son, maintaining a perfect image and never daring to challenge the old man. But now, throwing all caution to the wind, he had suddenly developed a sharp edge—much to Franklin's astonishment.
In truth, Franklin had been doing a lot of thinking lately. Although he and Irene had two daughters and a son together, he couldn't rely on the girls right now, and his youngest son was still too small. It would be at least a decade before the boy came of age, and by then, Yardley would have firmly cemented his control over Flynn Group.
He was slowly realizing that this entire empire would eventually have to be handed over to his eldest son. As much as he adored Irene, blood was thicker than water. Handing the family business to his son was far safer than entrusting it to a woman. He also had to consider the future; when he grew old and passed away, Irene would still be young. Who was to say she wouldn't have a change of heart and find another man?
With these thoughts in mind, Franklin had actually returned to the office with the intention of making peace with his son and repairing their fractured relationship. He never expected to be ambushed by that harpy, Veronica, the moment he walked through the doors. She had nearly sent him to an early grave with her venomous tongue.
Seeing this, Irene and Veronica hurried after them.
But Yardley shot Irene a vicious glare. "This is between a father and son. What the hell are you doing here?"
Irene froze in her tracks, looking so wronged she was on the verge of tears.
Franklin then turned to Veronica, his face livid. "My son and I are settling our accounts. Stay out of it!"
