Carter worked for Sebastian. Naturally, he would spin the narrative to favor his boss. That was Helena's immediate assumption.
"What kind of accident?" she asked with terrifying calm.
"A drunken one-night stand," Carter replied bluntly. "She took advantage of him when he was black-out drunk. That's how she conceived."
Helena was floored. She had never imagined that was how Janetta got pregnant. She couldn't even process the revelation before Carter pressed forward.
"Over the years, whenever Janetta stayed abroad, she was using it as a tactic to force him to chase her. But the reality is, he never gave in, did he?"
"..."
"If he truly loved her, then despite Grandpa forcing him to marry you, he has infinite ways to give Janetta a legitimate status. But he hasn't. The only woman to ever hold the title of Mrs. Hayes is you."
"..."
"When Grandpa died and you demanded a divorce, all he had to do was sign the papers. But he's been dragging his feet. I know how he operates. He doesn't hesitate. Yet he's stalling, even with Janetta expecting his child."
Carter kept dropping bombshell after bombshell. Every sentence left her reeling. Several times she opened her mouth to argue, but Carter seemed to read her mind, preemptively shooting down every doubt.
"She left the country to force his hand. He has a hundred different ways to make her come back without parading around with you. Has it never crossed your mind that he's actually trying to make amends with you?" Carter spelled it out for her. "You two have been locked in a cold war for years. He just doesn't know how to back down gracefully."
Helena's lips parted, but before she could ask anything else, Sebastian's icy voice cut through the air.
"Carter."
He leveled his assistant with a deadly, warning glare. Carter ducked his head, turning on his heel and vanishing down the corridor without another word.
