Helena Wallace watched the entire exchange, keeping a low profile. She hadn't expected Kyle Hayes to actually be Sebastian and Janetta's child.
No wonder he looked so familiar. Kyle strongly resembled Sebastian, especially around the eyes. It was just like how Skye's features were a carbon copy of her own.
Besides, everyone knew Sebastian and Janetta Ramirez were married, even if they never had a wedding. It was an open secret that Janetta had given the Hayes family a grandson back then, though it had never been officially announced to the public.
Helena lowered her gaze, memories of her own marriage to Sebastian rushing back. Thoughts of her daughter, Skye, quickly followed.
The past was a suffocating wave of despair, each memory a sharp jab to her soul. She had thought she was immune to the pain now. Yet, seeing them in person still brought a familiar, agonizing ache to her chest.
Her gaze remained locked on the family of three. From where she stood, she could see Sebastian and Janetta talking in hushed tones, looking just like any ordinary parents. Kyle was resting comfortably in Sebastian's arms.
Watching them, a self-deprecating chuckle escaped her lips. Skye was Sebastian's daughter too, but because of Janetta, she had been treated with unimaginable cruelty. The premature C-section, the fake surgeries—they had nearly pushed her baby to the brink of death.
Such a sweet child, fighting so fiercely and stubbornly just to survive. Why did she have to endure such torment?
Meanwhile, Janetta's son was treated like a priceless treasure, cradled safely in Sebastian's grasp. Helena looked down, her hands balling into tight fists as a lump formed in her throat.
Only after forcing herself to calm down did Helena look back toward Sebastian. Kyle was still resting his head on his father's shoulder. The family of three climbed into their car.
Just as Sebastian lifted Kyle into the vehicle, his gaze suddenly darted in Helena's direction. Her heart skipped a beat.
