She looked like a sweet pastry waiting for a bite.
So he took one, biting down hard on her lip.
Tasting the lingering fruit.
The sharp sting shocked her awake, leaving her incredibly thirsty, dizzy, and nauseous.
She felt unbearably sick.
"Your blood sugar dropped. Have some more." He brought the thermos to her lips.
She drank half the cup before her body finally started to stabilize.
Leaning back against the seat, the flush faded from her cheeks, leaving her lips deathly pale.
He offered her a piece of chocolate. "Do you want me to feed it to you?"
She took it and ate it in silence.
Her chest felt tight, her head spun, and she had zero desire to speak.
He reached out and touched her forehead. It was freezing.
Taking off his jacket, he draped it over her.
"You're probably experiencing heat exhaustion on top of the low blood sugar. Close your eyes and rest. I'll handle your parents and Mr. Walden."
That reminded her of Yves, and she turned to look out the window.
He was standing right outside the car, anxiously peering in.
But the top-tier Cayenne had heavily tinted windows; from the outside, it was impossible to see a thing.
She reached for the door handle, but Yorath grabbed her wrist. "Are you going out there like this just to make everyone worry?"
Leaning halfway over her, he rested his hand on the window controls.
"Roll down the window and say goodbye to him."
His long fingers tapped the button, lowering the glass just a crack before stopping it.
Yves immediately rushed over, bending down. Through the sliver, he saw her pale, covered in a cold sweat, leaning weakly against Yorath.
Ottilie leaned against the backseat, her eyes closed as she weakly rubbed her aching chest.
Yorath glanced in the rearview mirror. "A/C higher or lower?"
She just asked weakly, "Yorath, how did you know I was at City Hall? Does the ring you gave me have a tracker?"
"A tracker and a bug. If you're ever in danger, press the diamond, and I'll be by your side immediately."
Her scalp prickled with dread.
"You need to control me like this?"
"It's not control, it's protection."
If he had known he loved her three years ago, none of the ensuing tragedies would have ever happened.
"I don't need your protection."
His grip tightened slightly on the steering wheel, though his tone remained perfectly gentle.
"I need to protect you. Marry me. Whatever you want, I can give it to you."
