Having lived in poverty their entire lives, the Sewell parents were hypersensitive to money.
Hearing that their son had blown eight hundred thousand in a single night, the couple stood utterly paralyzed.
They both slowly turned to stare at their son, who was writhing on the floor, clutching his stomach and groaning in pain.
Yes, they were deeply patriarchal and worshipped the ground their son walked on.
But eight hundred thousand was a staggeringly real debt. Even if they sold their rundown family home, they wouldn't scrape together a fraction of that amount.
And if they sold the house, where the hell was the family supposed to live?!
Marie felt the sky crashing down on her. Her vision went black, and she collapsed backward like a falling tree.
James didn't even glance at his fainting wife. He rushed straight to Shawn and demanded, "Is what Mr. Fordham said true?"
Suddenly too scared to feel the pain, Shawn avoided his father's eyes and gave a slow, pathetic nod.
James's eyes rolled back in pure rage. "You... you spent eight hundred thousand in one night?! Do you have any idea how much money that is?! A normal person wouldn't make that in a lifetime! How the hell are we supposed to pay that back?!"
"Didn't Yorath give you two hundred thousand last time?" Shawn stammered. "Use that to pay down the first chunk."
"That two hundred thousand is our retirement fund!" James screamed, furious. "And you want to blow it on this?!"
"You don't have to use it!" Shawn shot back. "Just make Yorath pay! He's our son-in-law now! If he doesn't pay up, go sue Ottilie!"
James froze. "What do you mean, son-in-law?"
"He's marrying Ottilie! They're getting their license tomorrow! He even invited you to the wedding!"
Shawn shot a smug, defiant glare at Yorath.
*Wants to marry my sister without bleeding out a fortune? Keep dreaming.*
James's eyes darted around, calculating rapidly before landing on Yorath.
Even Marie, who had been halfway to passing out, miraculously found the strength to stand back up.
The couple marched over to Yorath. "You're marrying Ottilie?"
"Yes," Yorath confirmed smoothly.
"Our daughter is the apple of our eye. We raised her with the utmost care. If you want to marry her, we require a five-million-dollar wedding settlement, plus a mansion in the city center."
"No money? No problem," the owner sneered. "According to the rules of the underworld, we'll just castrate Shawn. Once we chop off his favorite appendage, the debt is wiped clean."
He snapped his fingers at the enforcers behind him.
Several hulking men in black suits instantly surged into the private room.
James and Marie desperately tried to block the door, but the massive men shoved right past them.
"Don't you dare touch my son! He's our only heir! If you end our bloodline, we'll kill ourselves right here in your club!"
"We're in the nightlife business, lady," the owner scoffed coldly. "Everyone here has a little blood on their hands. If you want to die, be my guest."
Instantly, one of the bouncers tossed a thick rope and a hunting knife on the floor right in front of them.
The parents flinched, stumbling backward in terror. At that exact second, a bloodcurdling scream from Shawn echoed through the room.
Horrified, the couple turned toward the door, screaming at Yorath's retreating back, "Mr. Fordham, help! Please save our son!"
"As long as you save him," Marie sobbed hysterically, "we won't ask for a single penny! You can have our daughter for free!"
