He Waited She Wilted (Ottilie and Yorath) novel Chapter 325

Just from walking a short distance, her chest began to ache, and the coughing started again.

Yorath pulled her into his arms, gently patting her back. "I'll go make you a warm poached pear and honey dessert."

He waited until she finally stopped coughing, eased her back down, and then headed downstairs alone.

He found some pears in the fridge, hollowed out the cores, added rock sugar and berries, and put the fruit back inside.

He set them in a steamer to cook for two hours.

While that was going, he started cooking a meal.

She had been eating incredibly bland hospital food for days.

She had lost so much weight.

When he held her, she felt as light as a feather. He needed to nurse her back to health.

When Marcella returned from her shopping, she spotted her second son—a man who never usually lifted a finger in the kitchen—diligently cooking.

He was so focused that he didn't even notice her walk in.

She stood by the dining room entrance, simply watching him.

As she watched, tears welled up in her eyes.

It wasn't that she opposed the marriage; it was that seeing her son give so much, yet receive not a single drop of love or compromise in return, broke her heart.

As a mother, it felt like a knife twisting in her chest.

That woman's heart was harder than stone.

How could she ever be a proper wife?

Yorath finished plating the food and carried the tray upstairs. He turned and finally noticed his mother standing a short distance away, her eyes red.

"You're back, Mom."

He walked over with the tray. "I only made enough for one. If you're hungry, have the kitchen make something for you."

Marcella gave him a tender, loving smile.

"I'm not hungry. You're so busy with work, yet you're taking care of these little things. Just look at you—your eyes are completely bloodshot. When was the last time you slept? No matter what happens, you have to take care of yourself. You're my own flesh and blood. I won't allow you to ruin your health."

"I'll take care of myself," he promised.

Satisfied, she finally walked away.

Up in his room, Ottilie was unaccustomed to the bed and couldn't fall asleep.

She tossed and turned. Just as she was finally drifting off, the door opened.

Yorath walked in. "Did I wake you?"
