He Waited She Wilted (Ottilie and Yorath) novel Chapter 339

She arrived with an entourage: her manager, three assistants, and a mountain of premium health supplements that filled a comically long gift registry.

Striding into the room, she greeted Marcella with practiced warmth. "Mrs. Fordham, so good to see you! I heard you were resting, so I had to come by and check on you."

"Thank you for the effort," Marcella replied politely, then glanced at her son. "Yorath, get Ms. Tarrant a glass of water."

Soren intercepted before Yorath could move, quickly pouring a glass of hot water and handing it to Nyssa. He pulled up a chair for her, then stepped back into the shadows.

Nyssa turned her megawatt smile on Yorath. "Yorath, it's been ages. You look like you've lost weight."

Yorath didn't even blink.

Unfazed by his silence, Nyssa turned back to Marcella. "Mrs. Fordham, you've probably heard by now, but my contract with Yorath's agency was terminated. Obviously, I never wanted to leave, but Ottilie and I have some history. Now that she's married to Yorath, I knew I wouldn't have a future there if I stayed."

Marcella frowned at that. Ottilie was blunt to a fault. How could she possibly be scheming against anyone?

"Is that true, Yorath?"

Yorath stepped up to the opposite side of the bed, his tone calm. "Corporate matters are a bit too convoluted to explain right now."

"Fair enough," Marcella sighed. "I don't meddle in the company anyway. I wouldn't understand half of it. If you two have business to discuss, take it outside."

Nyssa stood up gracefully. "Then I won't disturb your rest any longer."

"Take those gifts back for your parents," Marcella added dismissively. "My health is too fragile right now; the doctor says I can't handle heavy supplements."

Nyssa's smile cracked for a fraction of a second before she recovered. "That's perfectly fine. If you can't have them now, save them for later. Or, honestly, you could just feed them to your pets!"

With a final, elegant nod, she walked out.

In the hallway, she turned to Yorath. "Can we find a quiet place to talk?"
