He Waited She Wilted (Ottilie and Yorath) novel Chapter 340

It was barely dawn when loud knocking jolted Heath awake. He rolled his wheelchair to the door and yanked it open.

His mother, Eleanor, stood there in her silk nightgown, panic written all over her face.

"Heath, it's a disaster! The video of Lachlan's mother falling off the roof leaked online. It shows someone pushing her, someone in a bespoke silk gown. It looks just like me! Your father just lost his mind. He accused me of doing it. I swore it was a deepfake cooked up by our rivals to tear us apart at a critical moment. He barely calmed down, but he's already sent people to investigate. What are we going to do?" She was practically hyperventilating. "If he finds out the truth, he'll kill me!"

Decades ago, Eleanor had been the other woman. She had arranged to meet Lachlan's mother on the rooftop to 'talk.' They argued, and Eleanor had 'accidentally' shoved her over the edge. Back then, security cameras were basically non-existent. She thought she'd gotten away with the perfect murder. She had no idea someone was recording it. Thank god camera phones from that era had terrible resolution, or she'd already be in handcuffs.

Heath already knew exactly who was behind this. Ottilie Sewell. That bitch thought marrying Yorath made her untouchable, daring to strike first.

"Heath, say something!"

"Mom," Heath said coolly, "you've spent your entire life playing the game in this house. Tell me, was it all just for Dad's love?"

"Of course not! I did it for the money and the status. I wanted to make sure my child had a powerful father." Eleanor had clawed her way out of rural poverty. She knew exactly what she wanted, and she had systematically taken it.

"Then why are you panicking? The old man updated his will a few days ago. When he dies, I'm the sole legal heir. Lachlan has already been pushed out by the board. So what if the video leaked? It's been decades; the statute of limitations is dead and gone. And with the video quality being that grainy, who can prove anything?"

Eleanor hadn't gone from a nobody to a high-society matriarch without having nerves of steel. Hearing her son lay it out, her panic morphed into cold calculation.

"You're right. Might as well finish the job."
