He couldn't get ahold of Yorath directly. He only had the direct line for the guard booth at the Meridian Villa.
He had bought that number by bribing a guard with a gold necklace he originally bought for his wife.
When the call went through, a different guard answered.
The voice on the other end gruffly stated the shift had changed and the guy wasn't there.
"Please, just pass a message to him!" Fabian begged. "Tell him I'm being framed for theft and they dragged me to the precinct. Have him relay it to Mr. Fordham..."
Before he could even finish, the line went dead.
At that exact moment, the gold necklace Fabian had used as a bribe was sitting squarely on Yorath's desk.
Ever since the incident with Winnie Walden, every single person on the estate's payroll had been thoroughly vetted and replaced with absolute loyalists.
Not even a fly could buzz through the property without it being reported.
"You did well. The necklace is yours," Yorath told the guard standing at attention.
He then opened a drawer and tossed two thick stacks of cash onto the desk.
Two hundred thousand in cold, hard cash.
Completely loose, unbanded bills.
"And this is your bonus."
The guard snapped a salute. "Mr. Fordham, I will continue to serve you faithfully. I won't let you down."
Yorath lowered his voice slightly. "When you work here, you need to understand who the priority is. My wife is an actress. There are swarms of rats outside eager to sneak in, snatch a rumor, and sell it to the tabloids for a quick buck. I brought you here to hold the line. Protect the gates, maintain the perimeter, and you will be compensated beyond your wildest dreams. But if anyone gets greedy, takes a bribe from an outsider, and puts my wife in danger—well, my retaliation is something they won't live to regret."
"Rest assured, sir," the guard replied firmly. "We were all sent by Magnus. We're highly trained. Even without the bonuses, we would never compromise security."
Yorath nodded, gesturing for him to leave.
The guard walked out of the study, holding a heavy stack of cash in his hands.
He made sure to walk past every member of the household staff.
The message was loud and clear: if anyone offered them a bribe, reporting it directly to the boss would instantly earn them double the payout.
With that kind of money on the line, unshakeable loyalty was practically guaranteed.
Now, the entire staff was practically praying for someone to try and bribe them, just so they could snitch to Yorath for a massive payday.
