Chapter 111
Chapter 111
Ivana shouted in Draconian, but every soul understood what she meant.
Sunhwa from North Dawn was the second to move. Her soul lunged at the nearest Wraith, her movements a bit clumsy, but her strength was undeniable. She smashed half of its skull with a single punch.
The remaining seven souls followed suit, and the scene instantly turned chaotic.
Eleven souls drifted through the ruins, some were squeezing heads, some were smashing skulls, and others were busy draining energy. The chaos was everywhere.
Lyra stayed on the outskirts with Wraithslayer in hand, finishing off any Wraith the others couldn’t destroy, and hunting down any that managed to slip through.
With about twenty Wraiths to take down and eleven souls sharing the work, each soul barely got three apiece.
In less than two minutes, the ground was littered with chunks of flesh and pools of black liquid.
Some souls finished off their targets, looked around for more, but found none. Their forms practically radiated a hungry. unsatisfied vibe.
Ivana’s soul spun in place twice, muttering, “Not enough to kill.”
Lyra pointed into the distance. “There’s plenty.”
All the souls turned to look in the direction she pointed.
At the far end of the ruins, a wave of shadows covered the entire street, with countless Wraiths swarming toward them.
There were dozens, hundreds, even more, stretching with no end in sight.
The outlines of all eleven souls lit up at once.
It wasn’t fear.
It was the energy they’d just absorbed, still surging inside them, their Soul Power swelling, clamoring, hungry for more.
Lyra slung Wraithslayer over her shoulder, flashing a wide grin. “Comrades…
Her voice echoed through the ruins.
“Charge!” Lyra shouted.
All eleven soul figures burst forward together, slamming headlong into the black tide.
By the time Lyra split the thirty-seventh skull with Wraithslayer, the pile of flesh at her feet had already formed a small hill.
In soul form, there was no limit to stamina, no panting, no soreness. Her arm swung the blade just as sharp and decisive as the first swing.
Twenty meters ahead, Ivana and Sunhwa were positioned to the left and right, crushing or cracking skulls as they went
Jane hovered in the middle, her Soul Power splitting into three strands, simultaneously twisting and shattering three skulls.
Everything was going smoothly.
“Agh.”
Chapter 111
A scream rang out, and Lyra’s head snapped toward the source.
Forty meters to the left, a middle-aged man’s soul was crouched beside a Wraith, his palm pressed against the shattered skull, absorbing energy.
His focus was entirely on his hand, and he didn’t notice what was behind him.
A Wraith crawled out from behind a collapsed wall, moving on all fours, and slipped onto his back without a found.
Its mouth opened wide, biting into the soul’s shoulder, its teeth dug deep into the soul’s form, ripping off a chunk of his
essence.
It chewed on the stolen piece.
Then it swallowed.
A chunk of the man’s soul’s right shoulder collapsed inward, the glow fading to half its strength, and his scream torehrough the ruins.
With a powerful kick, Lyra shot forward and landed in front of him. She drove Wraithslayer straight into the Wraith’s eye socket, the blade punching through the back of its head. With a sharp twist, the entire skull blew apart.
The Wraith’s body slid off the man’s back, tentacles writhing out from the ragged stump of its neck.
She brought her blade down again, splitting it to pieces.
She turned to look at the man’s soul. White light was leaking from the gap in his right shoulder, and his soul was visibly dimmer and weaker.
“Everyone, watch out!” Lyra shouted at the top of her lungs.
“Keep your eyes on your backs while you’re absorbing energy! Don’t let them bite you!”
The man’s soul clutched his shoulder, muttering something in a shaky voice. The words were foreign, but the pain on his face said it all.
Ivana floated over, listened for a couple seconds, then turned to Lyra. “He says getting bitten drained his Soul Power. The energy he just absorbed doesn’t even cover what he lost from that bite.”
Lyra frowned.
The other souls had already seen it. The man’s outline was dim, and he was swaying unsteadily in the air.
No explanation was needed.
The price of getting bitten was right there for everyone to see.
The souls who had been fighting solo started to close ranks, instinctively drawing together.
Ivana and Sunhwa moved back-to-back, covering each other’s fronts and rears. No matter where a Wraith tried to sneak up. one of them was ready to block it.
The rest paired off or formed trios, so nobody would get jumped by a Wraith.
Jane’s Soul Power stretched out to shield the injured man’s flank. giving him space to fall back to the center and recover.
Lyra didn’t stick with the group. She twirled Wraithslayer with a flourish and slipped solo into the edge of the Wraith horde.
Her first swing sliced through the crowd, three heads went flying.

Chapter 111
With a backhanded slash, her second strike sent two more heads rolling.
She weaved between the Wraiths, every blow landing with deadly precision at the base of the skull.
65 vouche
As a Wraith lunged at her, she twisted aside, the tip of her blade flicking upward. Before the head even hit the ground, she was already moving on to the next target.
The Wraiths couldn’t even get close to her. She was cutting them down like slicing through butter.
She was so caught up in the rhythm, she lost track of time.
The number of Wraiths was dwindling, chunks of flesh scattered everywhere. Jane stayed in the back, absorbing energy from each corpse in turn, her soul growing stronger with every Wraith she drained.
The other souls were getting stronger too, their moves getting more savage and ruthless.
Everyone was totally hyped, lost in the frenzy of battle.
Lyra thought, Heh, this feels freaking amazing!
Not amazing for Garrett. He was craning his neck, staring at the sky until his eyes burned, and there was still no sign of the flare.
The radio operator kept his eyes glued to his watch, the second hand making its sixth full circle.
“Advisor Hayes, it’s been six minutes,” the radio operator said.
Garrett blinked, trying to ease the dryness in his eyes. The sky was still clear, no green flare in sight.
“Give it another minute,” he said.
Another minute ticked by, but still, no flare went up.
The roar of an engine echoed from the end of the road. Zoe’s SUV came barreling in, screeching to a halt, its tires carving a sharp arc in the gravel.
She jumped out, saw the look on Garrett’s face, and hurried over to him.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“It’s been seven minutes. The flare still hasn’t gone up.” Garrett replied.
Zoe turned and yanked open the car door. “I’ll go get her.”
“Wait.” Garrett stepped forward, putting his hand on the door. “Zoe, stay here. I’ll take a team.”
Zoe didn’t let go. “I know exactly where Lyra went into the fog wall. You don’t.”
I’ll just follow the tire tracks, Garrett said.
“By the time you find her, you’ll have lost another point in the fog, Zoe shot back.
Just as the two of them were locked in a standoff by the car door, the radio crackled to life. Lana’s voice came through. “Garrett, what’s going on? We haven’t had an update from the rear in two minutes.”
Garrett picked up the radio and reported. ‘Chief Advisor. Lyra hasn’t sent a signal in eight minutes. The video feed cut out the moment she entered the fog wall. I’m requesting permission to lead a team into the Wraith zone for support.
