Chapter 112
TITA
Wraithslayer stabbed through another head. Lyra pulled the blade free and took two steps back.
She scanned the battlefield. Black liquid splattered everywhere, chunks of flesh scattered across the ground. The ten souls were working together more smoothly than ever.
Lyra’s gaze landed on Jane and froze.
Jane was standing next to a Wraith, her palm pressed against its shattered skull, white light pouring out. Everything looked
normal.
“Wait, that’s not normal,” Lyra thought. There was a thin layer of gold spinning right over Jane’s chest, exactly where her heart was.
“Jane!” Lyra called out.
Jane looked up, pulled her hand away from the Wraith’s head, and drifted over.
“What’s up?” Jane asked.
“Wait, is that gold on you?” Lyra blurted out.
“What?” Jane blinked, confused.
“There’s gold swirling right over your heart,” Lyra said.
Jane looked down at her chest, stared for a moment, then shook her head. “I can’t see anything.”
She paused, sounding unsure. “Is this some kind of upgrade?”
Lyra pulled out the Soul Deck, flipped to Jane’s Tricolor Mimic card, checked it, then handed it to Jane. “Still C. Tier. No change.”
Jane was silent for a second. “Seriously, what is this?” she wondered. She couldn’t see it, and she didn’t feel any discomfort or anything off.
Lyra stuffed the card back into her pocket, but when her hand brushed against her waist, she suddenly paused.
“Wait, the flare. Lyra thought.
She froze in place, her mind spinning.
“When was the last time I set off a flare?” Lyra wondered.
“Crap,” Lyra muttered.
“What’s wrong?” Jane asked, snapping out of her thoughts.
Lyra pulled the flare from her waist, looking a bit sheepish. “I forgot to fire the flare. Got way too caught up in the fight.”
Jane saw Lyra’s ‘end of the world’ face and reassured her, “Don’t worry, we’re still fine. Any backup team would need at least ten minutes to arrive, and they’re probably still on the road. Fire it now and we’ll be okay.”
Lyra let out a sigh of relief, pulled the pin, and a green smoke column shot up, piercing through the gray mist above.
“There, it’s done,” Lyra said, breathing a sigh of relief.

Chapter 112
ESTA
Bella, riding shotgun, suddenly whipped her head around. jabbed her finger at the sky outside the window, her voice shooting up with excitement. “It’s up! It’s up!”
“Major General Vance just sent the signal! It’s green! She’s safe!” Bella shouted.
Zoe slammed on the brakes, and the SUV skidded a few meters on the gravel before coming to a stop. Everyone in the car grabbed the handrails to steady themselves, all craning their necks to look up.
The green smoke column was still hanging in the gray sky, its long trail clear as day.
“Awesome!” someone cheered.
“She’s safe!” another shouted.
“Major General Vance is safe.” someone else cried.
Everyone started chattering at once, and even Zoe, who’d been tense the whole time, finally relaxed a bit, letting out a breath.
“Captain.” Felix tapped the back of the front seat. “So, are we still heading over?”
Zoe rested her hand on the steering wheel, watching as the green smoke trail faded into the gray mist, until the last bit disappeared completely.
“Let’s head back,” Zoe said.
“Since she’s safe, we’d just get in the way if we went over. Let’s turn around,” Zoe added.
Just then, her waist communicator buzzed. She pulled it out and answered, and Garrett’s voice came through loud and clear.
“Lyra’s signal is up. She’s safe. All units, retreat. Repeat, all units retreat,” Garrett said.
Zoe acknowledged, clipped the communicator back to her belt, spun the wheel, and the SUV turned around. The engine roared as they sped back the way they came.
Bella glanced back at the gray mist wall receding into the distance, then slumped into her seat, murmuring thanks to Goddess Lyra, her voice overflowing with relief.
Back at the ruins, the sounds of battle had faded.
Lyra stood still, Wraithslayer shrank down to dagger size and she hooked it back onto her belt, holding her ground.
There weren’t many Wraiths left, just a few stragglers. Before Lyra could even make a move, the ten souls pounced on them.
Lyra stood at the edge, spread the ten cards out like a fan, checking them one by one.
Ivana’s Ambercat card had changed, the rank marker had shifted from D to D.
She glanced over the rest, but their ranks were still the same. Lyra snapped the deck shut, curiosity piqued, and studied the souls more closely.
Aside from the gold swirling around Jane’s heart, every other soul had a barely-there shimmer of gold at their chest. It was so faint, Lyra almost missed it. She couldn’t tell if this gold was connected to the Wraiths they’d just taken down.
Ivana and the others drifted over as the last sounds of battle faded away. All the Wraiths were gone.
“They’re all dead,” Jane said, glancing down at the cards in her hand. “What’s up?”
“Look,” Lyra said, holding up Ivana’s card for Jane to see.

Jane focused her soul-gaze on the card. “D+? Did she level up?”
“Looks like she got a half-level up,” Lyra said, tucking the card away. “Everyone else’s rank is still the same
“I leveled up?” Ivana’s eyes widened in surprise. “No wonder my soul feels so much easier to control now, so that’s what happened!”
