jane floated over and placed her hand on the half-dead Wraith’s head, drawing out its energy little by little.

The Wraith’s limbs jerked twice, then stopped moving altogether.

“Let’s go, Lyra said, standing up and sheathing Wraithslayer.

Zoe moved to the back of the group. “Lyra, I’m sitting this round out. I’ll handle the signal flares.”

“Alright,” Lyra replied.

Hundreds of Wraiths rushed at them. Jane led the charge, and the ten team members split into groups of two or three, ch picking their own target.

Lyra dashed in with Wraithslayer, and with one swift slash, a Wraith’s head soared through the air.

Zoe watched from the rear as they punched, crushed, or twisted off Wraith heads. The Brutality stunned her, and she thought, I’m way too gentle for this crowd.

The first wave was wiped out in no time. The team got more and more hyped as they fought, and soon everyone was cheering.

“I think I’m about to level up.”

“Whoa, we’re crushing it!”

“Man, this feels amazing.”

Zoe, standing at the back, glanced at her watch, unscrewed the cap of the green flare, and fired it into the sky.

“Let’s keep going,” Lyra said, flicking the black liquid off Wraithslayer and heading deeper into the fray.

The second wave came, then the third, then the fourth…

By the time they finished off the ninth wave, Zoe checked her watch and called out, “Alright, Lyra, let’s wrap it up for today. If we keep going, it’ll get dark soon.”

Lyra sheathed Wraithslayer and rolled her wrist. “Alright, let’s go help Auntie recharge.”

The crew doubled back, picking their way through the ruins until they reached the dream woman inside the Ghost Wall The space around her was cleared out again, and thanks to the two Vital Flames this time, the safe zone was even bigger than before.

Lyra stepped toward Auntie, but she retreated. Watching her from a few feet away, Lyra thought, ‘Her soul seems even weaker than before. Then she turned to the nine souls.

“Everyone, come here,” Lyra called out.

The nine souls gathered around her.

Lyra pointed at Jane. “Jane is about to transfer soul power to her. Everyone, pay close attention and learn how she does it.”

“Watch where she puts her hand, where the energy flows out, and the route it takes,” Lyra instructed.

“When we get back, take some time with your cards to really feel the nurturing process, notice how the energy comes in,

which direction it moves, and what it feels like. Make sure you remember it all, Lyra added.

Tomorrow, you’ll all get your turn to transfer soul power, Lyra said.

The nine souls nodded together.

Lyra stepped aside, and Jane floated over to the woman, lifting her right hand to hover just above the top of her head.

“Alright, I’m starting,” Jane said.

Soul power gathered in Jane’s core, channeling into her palm. Soft light glimmered between her fingers, streaming down onto the woman’s head in gentle threads.

The nine souls watched, not blinking once.

As Jane transferred the energy, she explained, “Watch closely: the energy starts in your core, moves to your palm, then you press it down…”

Her hand sank down just a bit.

“Just like pouring water, let it flow down with gravity. If you push it sideways, the soul power will just disperse.” Jane said.

Ivana was completely absorbed, quietly repeating to herself, “Let it follow gravity, press down…”

Jane kept going, “Once the energy goes in, her soul will naturally split, most of it drains down through her feet and gets absorbed by the earth, while just a little bit stays in her body.”

“All we can do is channel as much as we can, so the amount that sticks around inside her gets a bit bigger every time.” Jane

added.

As time ticked by, Jane’s soul dimmed a little, and she finally pulled her hand back.

Lyra stared at the woman. Still nothing, not even a hint of movement. She didn’t react at all.

She sighed. “Let’s go.”

“We transferred more energy today than yesterday,” Jane said, floating over to Lyra’s side.

“And a bit more stayed in her this time,” Jane added.

Lyra looked away.

Jane said softly, “Don’t rush, Lyra. She’s missing too much to recover overnight. Trust me, sooner or later we’ll wake her, and the others too.”

Lyra glanced back at her and nodded firmly. “Alright.”

The crew pulled back, and by the time they made it to the temporary base, dusk was just settling in.

Zoe walked into the Comms Room and dialed Lana’s direct line.

“Chief Advisor, daily report,” Zoe said.

“Go ahead,” Lana replied.

“I went into the Wraith zone with Lyra today, in the flesh. The Vital Flame kept me safe the whole time, and I didn’t lose any Vital Flame values at all. This approach works,” Zoe reported.

“Good, Lana replied.

“The Vital Flame really holds those Wraiths back. Not only does it burn right through their defenses, it also stops their tentacles from healing. Zoe continued.

“Once a Wraith gets hit by the Vital Flame, its healing speed drops to a third, and its tentacles can’t approach the flame at all.” Zoe added.

On the other end, Lana’s pen scratched across paper. “Is the data accurate?”

“I watched everything myself, so I can vouch for it. I’ve got video footage too. I’ll upload it to Command Center soon, toe replied.

Lyra sat on her bed, thinking about Zoe’s question. She wondered, ‘I can’t see ghosts, but the records say they could. Where did things go wrong?”

She grabbed her phone, opened up the folder, and began scrolling through the scans of the thirty-seven-page handwritten journal, checking each page one by one.

One entry read: “Gather the flame in your left palm, let it loose from your right.”

“If you focus the flame in your palm, it can hurt ghosts; spread it through your whole body, and it keeps evil at bay.”

Her finger paused on a line she’d missed before. “The flame unlocks every energy channel, once they’re open, everything flows smoothly.”

Lyra thought, ‘Every energy channel.

She traced her thumb over the screen, lost in thought.

Lyra mused. “The palm is an energy channel. The core is an energy channel.

She wondered, What about the eyes?’

She set her phone aside and closed her eyes.

Her core gave a little jolt, and the flame flared to life. After these past couple of days, gathering the flame didn’t take nearly as long as it used to.

The flame rose from her core up to her chest. Usually, it would split and flow down both arms, but this time, Lyra deliberately stopped it from heading that way.

She concentrated on her eyes, trying to channel the flame toward them. The flame stalled, circling in her chest for a bit.

She tried again, and this time the flame rushed up her neck and into her head, it burned like fire.

Lyra’s brow twitched, but she endured the heat and kept guiding it onward.

Her eyes began to heat up, just like the first time she gathered the flame in her palm, but this time, the sensation was deeper, more intense, and even more sensitive.

The heat built up in her eyes for a split second, and then a sharp pain stabbed through her.

Lyra’s eyes snapped open, and she pressed a hand to them, sucking in a sharp breath from the pain.

Lyra hissed in pain.

After a while, once the heat finally faded, Lyra let go of her eyes and blinked a couple of times. Her vision was back to normal, and the room looked just like it always had.
