Chapter 138

Chapter 138

Lil Lily crouched in the corner, knees pulled up to her chest, clutching the whistle so tightly that its edges dug into her paim The sting helped her stay focused.

She calmed herself and stood up, though her legs were still a bit weak.

Lil Lily glanced at the countdown on the wall.

[Hideout Countdown: 18:03]

Eight minutes left.

Lil Lily slapped her cheeks, forcing back the tears. “Find the treasure chest,” she told herself.

She whispered to herself, then pushed open the door to the south. The next room turned out to be a kitchen.

Lil Lily bent down to check under the stove, but it was empty.

She opened the fridge, just a few bottles inside, no sign of a chest.

The overhead cabinets were too high, so she climbed onto the stove and felt around in the back. Her fingers brushed against something hard.

Lil Lily’s heart skipped a beat as she yanked it out.

It was a palm-sized wooden box, carved with patterns, way smaller than the treasure chests she’d found in earlier games

Lil Lily hopped down from the stove, hugging the box to her chest. Was this really the treasure chest? she wondered, pausing for a second.

She opened the box, and inside was a golden coin. She picked it up and turned it over, a smiling face on one side a crying face on the other.

There was a slip of paper tucked beneath the coin. Lil Lily slid it out and read what was written:

(Congrats! You found a real treasure chest. Hang on to your reward.]

(Fate Coin: Heads brings good luck; tails brings trouble.]

[Note: You can only use it once per round ]

She flipped the slip over, and there was another line on the back

[I bet you don’t have the guts to toss the coin]

Lil Lily stared at the last line. “What’s that supposed to mean? Who’s making this bet with me?’ she murmured

Lil Lily clenched the coin in her hand. Whatever, she thought. At least I finished the mission I won’t die for failing to bind the treasure chest.

She tucked the coin into her inner pocket, zipped it up, and patted her chest. “Done”

Lil Lily remembered everyone’s advice: hide and wait for Goddess Lyra. Since she’d found a chest, she’d return to the last room. This kitchen looked far too dangerous.

Just as she was about to leave, the door to the south swung open. A man stood there, blond hair, blue eyes, tall, with a polite smile on his face.

Chapter 138

It was Alex

Lal Lily recognized him right away.

“Hey Alex greeted her, sounding casual. “You’re one of the Draconia kids, huh?

Lil Laly didn’t answer. She pressed her back against the fridge, her hand gripping the dice in her pocket

Alex took a step forward, his eyes sweeping the kitchen before landing on the open, empty box on the stove

His expression shifted. “You found the treasure chest?”

Lil Lily still didn’t say a word.

Alex took another step forward, now just ten feet away from her.

“Hey, don’t freak out, I’m not a Wraith,” he said, spreading his hands. “We’re both players here, right?”

Lil Lily’s lips moved. “What do you want?”

“How about we work together?” Alex crouched down so he was eye level with her. “This maze is seriously dangerous. It’s way too hard to go solo. Neither of us have our teammates around, so maybe we could help each other out”

Lil Lily stared into his eyes. Goddess Lyra had warned her, this guy couldn’t be trusted.

“I don’t need your help,” Lil Lily said, trying to keep her voice steady.

Alex’s smile stayed put. “You sure? When the room flips, can you really handle it alone? What’s your plan for next time?”

Lil Lily bit her lip. He was right; another flip in this kitchen would send sharp tools flying. She thought, I should go back and wait for Goddess Lyra’

“I don’t need your help, Lil Lily repeated, her voice a little louder this time.

Alex stood up, not moving any closer, but he didn’t leave either.

His gaze dropped to Lil Lily’s pocket, he could guess that’s where she kept her item.

I saw your item during the last round’s lottery,” Alex said, sounding casual. “It’s a six-sided die, right? Each side does something different?”

Lil Lily’s hand tightened around the die in her pocket.

“I’ve got a proposal,” Alex said, pulling out a piece of Safehouse Chalk and waving it in front of her “With this, I can create a totally safe zone, nothing can get to you.”

He held the chalk out in front of her. “When the room flips or the hunt begins, I can set up a safehouse for you to hide in

Lil Lily eyed the chalk. A totally safe zone was tempting, but she still didn’t reach for it.

“What do you want?” Lil Lily asked.

Alex smiled. “Smart girl. I want your die.”

Lil Lily shook her head. “No way.”

“How about we make a different deal?” Alex said, pulling the chalk back. “Give me the item you just found?”

Lil Lily took a half-step back.

Alex kept smiling, but his eyes changed. He was weighing whether to take it by force Unless he had no chore he duty’t want to cross that crazy Draconia maniac

just then, a voice called out from behind Alex.

“Lil Lily Jane called.

Lil Lily’s eyes sparkled as Jane’s ghost phased through the wall and floated above Alex. She thought, Jane is here. relief) rushing through her.

Alex jerked back when the ghost suddenly materialized. The calculation in his eyes vanished, replaced by a friendly.

harmless smile.

“Jane. Lil Lily called out.

Jane drifted in front of Lil Lily, putting herself squarely between her and Alex. The hair on the back of Alex’s neck stood up. he could feel the killing intent radiating from her.

“Relax, I was just thinking we could team up,” Alex said, still sounding polite. “But now that your teammate’s here. I guess that’s not happening.”

Alex kept his polite tone. “Alright, kid, I’m heading out. If you change your mind, just give the whistle a blow anytime”

He turned, pushed open the door he’d entered through, and walked out, his footsteps growing fainter as he disappeared down the hallway.

Lil Lily let out a sigh of relief, her legs giving out as she slid down the fridge to the floor. “Jane…”
