Chapter 139

Chapter 139

Alex leaned against the wall, twirling the Safehouse Chalk between his fingers. He only had three uses left for the Safehouse Chalk, so he needed to ration it.

He slipped the Safehouse Chalk back into his pocket and glanced up at the countdown on the wall.

Only five minutes left before the rooms would flip again.

Alex lingered, replaying what had happened. The Draconia girl had found a chest and earned an item. Lyra was lucky, and little Lily was lucky too. He envied them.

He’d searched five rooms and only found two chests, all empty. It really pissed him off.

Then there was that spirit. He had no idea what it was, but it appeared fast and knew Lily. Was it an item? It looked powerful enough to make him jealous.

Alex let out a sigh. He really wanted to work with Lyra, for real. But why wouldn’t she give him a chance? It drove him crazy

Lyra found the treasure chest in the third room, hidden under the cushion of a sofa.

She didn’t open it right away. Instead, she took a closer look, it was wooden, about the size of her palm, with patterns carved on the surface. Definitely not like the ones she’d found before.

Lyra reached out and lifted the lid. Inside, there was a Token and a slip of paper.

She pulled out the slip of paper first. On the front, it read:

[Congrats on finding a real treasure chest! Go ahead and grab your reward item.]

[Damaged Token: Nothing but worthless trash.]

On the back, it said: [But hey, cheer up! At least you finished the “Find the Treasure Chest” quest. Feeling good?]

Lyra tossed the slip of paper back into the chest, pulled out the Token, and then took out her own Token to compare the two side by side.

They had the same material, patterns, and size. Only the broken markings differed. Lyra wondered, ‘What characters are these?

Lyra smirked. Worthless trash? Yeah, right. She had a hunch this Token was actually a huge deal, just no clue how to crack the puzzle yet.

She slipped the Token into her hidden pocket and pushed the door open, moving on.

At the Draconia Command Center, Lana fixed her gaze on the big screen as the tech team projected the first draft of the maze layout.

“Report: Based on the movement patterns of the fifty players so far, our preliminary estimate is that the maze contains about one hundred and fifty rooms,” a tech team member announced.

“The margin of error comes from some rooms being identical. If Major General Vance and Lina could leave more markers, we could get a more accurate count,” another tech team member added.

“That matches Jane’s estimate, maybe even a bit less, Ms. Reed nodded.

Lana’s gaze shifted to Alex’s screen. He pushed open another door.

This time, there was a chest in the room. When he opened it, he found a slip of paper and a black Checkmate Card inside.

Alex picked up the slip of paper and glanced at it, and he couldn’t help but smirk.

He turned the Checkmate Card over in his hand, checking it twice before slipping it into his pocket.

Lana frowned. “Tech team, can you read what’s on that slip of paper?”

“Zooming in now.” a tech team member said.

A few seconds later, the screen zoomed in, and the text on the slip of paper came into focus.

[Congrats on finding a real treasure chest. Go ahead and grab your reward item.]

[Checkmate Card: Pick a player. They can’t move for the next ten minutes. Only one use per round.]

Garrett was the first to react. “This item…”

“It’s for messing with other players,” Lana said, her voice dropping.

Not for dealing with the Wraiths, this one was meant for people. The instructions spelled it out: it’s for players, no doubt about it.

Ms. Reed tapped her fingers on the table. “He was after Lil Lily’s item before, and now he’s got a control item of his own, plus the Safehouse Chalk.”

Lana picked up where she left off. “He could use the Checkmate Card to freeze a player, then snatch their item.”

She frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean? Is the game actually encouraging players to go after each other?”

Lyra pushed open the door to the fifth room and spotted Lil Lily.

“Goddess Lyra. Lil Lily called out.

Lil Lily ran straight across the room and threw herself into Lyra’s arms, hugging her tightly around the waist.

Lyra looked down at her. “Where are you hurt?”

“I’m fine, just a scratch!” Lil Lily said. Her eyes were rimmed with red, but she didn’t cry. “Goddess Lyra, I found a treasure chest! And it’s real!”

“I found one too,” Lyra said, ruffling Lil Lily’s hair. She looked up at Jane. “Thanks for your hard work, Jane.”

Jane floated nearby. “No trouble on the way, except for that Alex…

“Yeah! Goddess Lyra, Alex tried to get me to team up with him, but I remembered what you told me, so I said no, Lil Lily said.

“He didn’t mess with you, did he?” Lyra asked.

“Nope! He bolted as soon as Jane showed up!” Lil Lily replied.

Lyra nodded, her eyes flicking to the countdown on the wall.
