“Go!”. As the black light spread, Alex whipped his right hand, sending the boomerang slicing through the air toward where Lyra had vanished. The Checkmate Bind lasted ten minutes, so what good was invisibility now?
Just before the Checkmate Bind could lock her in place. Lyra flicked her arm, triggering the hidden dart she’d gotten from Tanaka. The poisoned needle shot toward Alex. If it so much as scratched him, the toxin would spread in five seconds. guaranteed death.
The boomerang and the needle crossed paths in midair, barely missing each other.
The boomerang flew straight for Lyra, but before it could get close, it crashed into an invisible barrier.
With a loud thud, the boomerang clattered to the ground.
Before Alex could even react, a poisoned needle shot out of thin air, aiming straight for his face. He twisted aside just in time, the needle zipped past his ear and buried itself in the wall behind him, its tail still humming.
He barely had time to feel relieved before a force seized his throat, hoisting him up and smashing him down onto the conference table. The table split in two with a thunderous crack, and Alex was left spitting blood.
Clara revealed herself from invisibility, her soul form hovering overhead, soul power locking his limbs in place.
From Lyra vanishing, to Alex using the Checkmate Card, to him getting slammed onto the table, everything happened in the blink of an eye.
Alex was sprawled among the shattered wood, his vision flickering to black for a moment. When it cleared, pain surged from his spine all the way to the back of his skull, and his mouth tasted like blood.
He coughed, spitting out another mouthful of blood.
“Lyra, do we finish him now?” Clara asked.
“Do it, Lyra said. Invisible or not, she saw everything. Her goal was his death, whether by her hand or Clara’s. There was no need to wait for the Checkmate Card to end.
Hesitation meant danger.
Alex listened to their conversation. He knew he couldn’t win in a straight-up fight, and he’d never planned to. The Checkmate Card and boomerang were just distractions, his real trump card was on his right index finger.
It was an Emerald Ring, one of his life-saving tools, able to teleport him instantly.
As Clara’s soul power tightened around his throat, Alex forced himself to stay conscious, pressing his thumb hard against the Emerald Ring.
Click.
The Emerald Ring shattered, and a surge of emerald light burst from his fingers, wrapping around Alex and ripping him free from Clara’s grip. The light swept him up and carried him off in a flash.
Bang!
Carried by the emerald light, Alex was hurled straight into the door, then dropped to the floor, the door didn’t move an inch.
The emerald glow faded, the Emerald Ring’s power spent, and he was still stuck inside.

Chapter 158
Alex’s forehead smacked the floor, his nose flooded with the metallic tang of blood. Panic clawed at him. Why can’t I get out? Why?!’
Clara tried to wrap her soul power around him again, but it bounced right off. Clara was like, “What the hell?”
“Lyra, he must’ve used another item. I can’t get close to him, can’t kill him,” Clara reported.
“He’s got a ton of items,” Lyra said, surprised. She thought, ‘Before this round Alex only had Safehouse Chalk and a Fate Mirror. Did he loot that many chests? He could support Jung-hoo and still be loaded.
Lyra thought, I want to rob him!”
Alex slumped against the door, pushing himself up as he hit the floor. Instantly, he triggered another item that blocked any soul from coming close.
He coughed, fury burning through him. ‘Damn it. I just burned through two priceless items for nothing!”
On the other side of the room, the Veilmist wore off, and Lyra’s figure reappeared. The Checkmate Card was still in effect. so she stood there, unable to move.
Now, one was pinned by the Checkmate Card, the other had failed to escape but was protected from any soul attacks. The scene was strangely peaceful.
Alex turned his face, chest rising and falling as blood dripped from the corner of his mouth, smearing his clothes.
He looked up at Lyra, who stood just a few meters away, staring down at him.
“Why?” Alex croaked, his voice rough and tasting of blood.
“What?” Lyra replied.
“Why didn’t the teleport work?” Alex asked.
Lyra tilted her head. ‘Because the room’s locked down.”
Alex: “Huh?”
“When we walked in, the soul at my side sealed off the whole room. From the moment you stepped inside, we’ve been mside that soul power field, Lyra explained.
She added helpfully, “You can think of it as a ‘domain’, pretty much like your Safehouse.”
Alex let out a sigh. He’d thought he had every angle covered, Checkmate Card, boomerang, teleport, offense, defense, escape routes. Now, all of that was for nothing.
“You set this up in advance, Alex said.
“Nah, just something I threw together on the spot,” Lyra replied.
Alex let out a sudden, light laugh, coughing between breaths.
“Alright, I lost,” he said.
His tone shifted, dropping the gentlemanly act and sounding more honest. “Lyra, there’s something I’m really curious about.”
“Go ahead,” Lyra replied.
“From the very start, the kindness I showed you was genuine,” Alex said, his voice low.

“And the offer to team up? That was real, too. You’re strong, I’m no slouch either. If we joined forces, nobody in this game could even touch us,” Alex continued.
Lyra didn’t cut him off.
“But you always chose Lina, Lydia, Sergei over me.” Alex continued, frustration in his tone.
“Lydia, I get, she’s a powerhouse. But the other two? They’re from small countries, no resources, and you still went for them. Why?” Alex pressed.
“But you always leave me out,” Alex continued.
“I’m just as good as them,” Alex insisted.
“Why?” Alex asked.
Alex stared at her. “I probably won’t make it out of here alive. Once the Checkmate Card wears off, you’ll finish me off”
“Since I’m about to die, can you at least tell me? Why do you always pick people who just hold you back instead of me? Alex asked.
“Why do you always pick people who are just dead weight, but never me?” Alex pressed.
Lyra looked at him. “Alex.”
“Yeah?” Alex replied.
“Didn’t I already tell you why?” Lyra asked.
