Chapter 161
Lyra looked away, ignoring Alex. Lyra thought, ‘So what if he’s still alive? No way he has an endless stash of life-saving iterns.
Lydia caught the throat-slitting gesture Alex made, her eyes narrowing with a hint of murderous intent. “Lyra, what happened?”
“We’ll talk about it when we get back. For now, focus on your rewards. Don’t waste time,” Lyra replied.
Lina spoke up without hesitation. “Lyra, I’ve killed five. I’ll choose to clear a zone of Wraiths.”
Lyra nodded.
Lina had been eyeing that reward since the very first round. With Southern Reach down to its last safe zone, clearing a zone of Wraiths was basically a lifeline.
[Belsoria Player Sergei has killed 2. Please draw your reward.]
The nine players on the field were all taken aback.
Lydia frowned. “Is the game calling names now?”
“They never used to say who goes first,” Sergei said, catching on too.
Lil Lily tilted her head. “Did they change the rules this round?”
“Hasn’t the game been changing the rules all along?” Lyra asked, not surprised at all. She’d already had a bunch of her items restricted by the game, and it kept quietly tightening the rules day by day.
She glanced at the two pillars of light ahead, the personal reward pool and the real-world reward pool. The game now decided the order based on kill count, with those who killed the least going first.
“Sergei, keep an eye out for any changes in the reward pool this round,” Lyra said.
Sergei nodded, handed the iron pipe to Lydia, and headed over to the personal reward pool.
White light engulfed him, and after a few seconds, the system announcement echoed out.
[Congratulations, Belsoria Player Sergei. You’ve drawn a D Tier reward: Iron Wrist Guards.]
D Tier.
Sergei had only killed two people, just scraped by on the Hunter mission’s minimum kill count.
Bare minimum kills, bare minimum reward.
Sergei stepped out of the pillar of light, Iron Wrist Guards strapped to his wrists. He looked over at Lyra and nodded. “The reward pool’s changed. Items are sorted by tier now. My reward was picked at random from the D Tier pool.”
“Figures,” Lyra muttered.
The game announcement echoed out once more.
[Bahtan Player Hania has killed 3. Please draw your reward.]
Hania stepped into the pillar of light.
[Congratulations, Bahtan Player Hania. You’ve drawn a C Tier reward: Scout Moth.]

Chapter 161
Next up.
[Britannia Player Ron has killed 3. Please draw your reward.]
[Congratulations, Britannia Player Ron. You’ve drawn a B Tier reward: Contract Chain.]
Lil Lily was quick on the uptake. “Wait, they both killed three people, but one got C Tier and the other got B Tjer?”
“Hania was a Hunter from the very beginning. Ron only became a Hunter halfway through, after starting out as a Hider Lyra explained.
Lyra guessed, “So if you become a Hunter by killing someone yourself, you get a higher-tier reward than if the game just picks you.”
Lydia snorted. “The game’s basically encouraging us to kill each other.”
“Yeah,” Lyra agreed.
[Sambadia Player Sophia has killed 5. Please choose your reward.]
Sophia stepped into the pillar of light and came out a moment later.
[Congratulations, Sambadia Player Sophia. You’ve chosen an S Tier reward: Clear a zone of Wraiths.]
Just like Lina, Sophia made the same choice. Lyra wasn’t surprised. Sambadia was down to its last safe zone too. When things got that desperate, anyone would pick the reward that saved their country.
[Southern Reach Player Lina has killed 5. Please choose your reward.]
Lina balled her fists, determination flashing in her eyes, then stepped into the pillar of light. Once the white glow faded, the system announcement rang out.
[Congratulations, Southern Reach Player Lina. You’ve chosen an S Tier reward: Clear a zone of Wraiths.]
When Lina stepped out of the pillar of light, her steps were shaky, she awkwardly swung her left foot and left hand together. swaying as she made her way toward Lyra.
Her eyes welled up with tears. “Lyra.”
She stood before Lyra, her voice trembling. “I did it.”
Lina said, “I really did it, I got the reward to clear a zone of Wraiths.”
Lyra smiled warmly. “Yeah, you did it!”
Lydia gave her a firm pat on the shoulder, saying nothing, but the force of it was all the congratulations she needed.
Sergei grinned and said, “Congrats!”
Lil Lily bounced over, grabbed Lina’s arm, and shook it excitedly. “Lina! You did it! Congrats!”
Lina finally broke into a wide grin, nodding hard.
From the very first round she’d joined, she’d always been just a little short, three points, two points, one point. But this time, she finally made it.
She wiped at the corners of her eyes, forced her emotions down, and stepped aside.
[Ursaria Player Lydia has killed 5. Please choose your reward.]

Chapter 161
50 vourners
Lydia slammed her Stellar Hammer down and marched toward the pillar of light. Weapons weren’t what she needed, she needed her own way to stay alive. This round, she’d only survived thanks to Lyra’s items. Now, she needed something for herself.
[Congratulations, Ursaria Player Lydia. You’ve chosen an S Tier reward: Reversal Armor.]
When Lydia stepped out, a thin, semitransparent piece of armor had appeared in her hand. It would be almost invisible against the skin.
“What does it do?” Lyra asked.
“If I get hit with something fatal, it kicks in automatically and brings me back to my best shape, just like before I got hurt. Lydia said, pressing the thin armor to her arm. It vanished instantly, blending right into her skin.
“That’s all I need,” Lydia said.
Only three people were left to choose their rewards: Lyra, Lil Lily, and Alex.
Soon, the game announcement echoed out again.
[Draconia Player Lyra has killed 5. Please choose your reward.]
Lyra stepped into the personal reward pillar. Just as Sergei said, it had changed. The messy pile of items was now neatly sorted into five sections, from D Tier to S Tier.
She headed straight for the S Tier section, checking them out one by one.
She didn’t need any more attack items. Her “40-meter blade” Wraithslayer was still a beast, and she’d picked up a few more attack items this round anyway.
For defense, her Decoy Doll still had nine lives left.
Her gaze stopped at the support items, and she paused.
There was a jet-black pen, covered in fine engravings.
[Rulebreaker Pen: Lets you rewrite one game rule inside the mission. Right after you use it, the new rule kicks in and stays until the mission ends. You can only use it once per round. Only small rules can be changed, victory conditions and core mechanics are off-limits.]
Lyra reached out and tapped the item, confirming her choice.
The Rulebreaker Pen materialized in front of her, and she twirled it between her fingers.
Lyra chuckled softly, clutching the pen as she stepped out of the pillar of light.
[Congratulations, Draconia Player Lyra. You’ve chosen an S Tier reward: Rulebreaker Pen.]
