Chapter 162
Alex stepped into the beam of light, and the white glow swallowed him up.

Lil Lily stood on her tiptoes, trying to get a better look into the beam. “Goddess Lyra, what does ‘double’ mean? Are we really getting two S Tier rewards?”
“Probably,” Lyra replied, her eyes fixed on the beam.
Lydia lifted her chin. “This guy’s been hiding his cards well.”
Inside the beam of light, Alex looked around at the items laid out before him.
Alex scanned the S Tier section, every item had its name and effect clearly displayed.
Anyone else would be jumping for joy at getting to pick two S Tier rewards, but Alex just couldn’t bring himself to feel happy.
His Checkmate Card was gone, his teleportation ring was shattered, his Boomerang had been taken, his Safehouse Chalk was confiscated, and every other little gadget he had was stripped away.
He was back to square one.
And to make matters worse, he’d been forced to use the hidden item he got from the Cursed Forest mission, the Half-Life Revelation, just to survive. The memory made his blood boil.
Back then, that treasure chest had held one piece of intel and one hidden item. The intel was about the game’s origins; he’d given it to his country, and it later matched the Fate Mirror’s answers. But he never told anyone about the hidden item.
He never wanted to use it, because that item had a massive flaw. Once he used it, he’d never be whole again.
He took a couple of deep breaths, trying to steady himself, then turned his gaze back to the reward pool.
Even two S Tier rewards couldn’t patch up the mess he was in now.
What was he missing?
He had nothing to deal with souls.
He had no offensive items.
He had no support tools.
His stealth, scouting, and info-gathering? All gone.
Alex’s eyes swept over the S Tier section, then moved to A Tier, and finally to B Tier.
Allies were another problem.
Tanaka was dead.
Jung-hoo was dead.
He knew Hanmark and Niphonia had only two districts left after this round and could be eliminated anytime. They were unfit as allies: at best, they were weapons to use.
Sophia had five kills. Sambadia was down to its final district, and she had both the strength and the will to survive.

Ron had three kills, had switched to a Hunter halfway through, and Britannia still had a solid foundation with eight districts left.
These two were worth reaching out to, maybe they could become allies.
[Please choose your rewards as soon as possible.]
The game’s notification cut through his thoughts.
Alex didn’t reach out right away. Instead, he asked, “Can I exchange S Tier items for other tiers?”
The announcement went silent for a moment.
[Yes.]
“What’s the exchange rate?” Alex asked.
[S:A:B:C:D 1:2:3:4:5.]
Alex tapped his thigh. So basically, one S Tier got him two A Tiers, or three B Tiers, or even five D Tiers.
“Can I choose to keep the rewards I pick hidden? Like, not have them announced?” Alex asked.
[No, all rewards will be announced in real-time.]
Alex pressed his lips together. If he couldn’t keep his choices hidden, then whatever he picked, everyone outside would hear it loud and clear.
He was basically forced to lay all his cards out for Lyra to see, damn annoying, but he had no choice.
His eyes locked onto one item in the S Tier section: the Soul Extinguisher Lantern.
[Soul Extinguisher Lantern: When lit, all soul entities within a 100-foot radius of the user have their soul power suppressed by 90% for five minutes. If the same soul is suppressed three times, it will be destroyed. Can be used up to three times per round.]
This wasn’t just about locking down one soul, it was about suppressing every soul within range.
Even if Lyra had ten souls backing her up, once this lantern was lit, every single one would have their soul power slashed down to just ten percent.
With their soul power crippled, could Clara still throw him around? Could she even lock him in a room?
Alex reached out and selected the Soul Extinguisher Lantern.
That was one S Tier reward used up.
For the remaining S Tier slot, he chose to exchange it for two A Tier rewards.
He looked over the A Tier section twice, then selected two items with a tap of his finger.
[Binding Thorns (Seed): After binding it with a blood contract, throw the seed and it’ll instantly take root and go wild. Vines and thorns will shoot up, wrapping around the target’s body, with sharp spikes piercing their flesh and continuously draining their blood, causing severe blood loss and locking them in place. Weakness: weak to fire.]
[Phantom Boots: Slip these on and your movement trail shows up three seconds late, while tracking items become 50% less accurate. It’s a passive effect, no activation needed.]
He confirmed his picks, and the items appeared in front of him.

Alex stepped out of the beam, his face still ghostly pale, the blood at the corner of his mouth untouched. He looked completely drained as he shuffled slowly back to his spot.
[Congratulations to Aurelia Player Alex for selecting the S Tier reward: Soul Extinguisher Lantern.]
[Congratulations to Aurelia Player Alex for selecting the A Tier reward: Binding Thorns.]
[Congratulations to Aurelia Player Alex for selecting the A Tier reward: Phantom Boots.]
Sergei blurted out, “So many?!”
Lydia frowned, her expression tightening.
Lil Lily counted on her fingers. “One S Tier, two A Tiers, three rewards in total!”
Lyra didn’t say a word, just stared at Alex for a couple of seconds.
Soul Extinguisher Lantern, targets souls.
Binding Thorns, for offense.
Phantom Boots, makes it harder for anyone to track him.
None of them were for survival.
She lowered her gaze, wondering why he hadn’t picked any survival items. She had taken his Safehouse Chalk, so he should have had nothing left to keep himself alive.
In this situation, if he had not picked any, Lyra saw only two possibilities.
Either he still had some survival items hidden away and did not need any more.
Or he had some other trick up his sleeve and was not afraid of dying at all.
When she thought back to how she had killed him herself, only for him to show up here alive and well, Lyra knew something was definitely off.
She’d have to get Lana and Ms. Reed to help her figure this out when they got back.
“Goddess Lyra,” Lil Lily said, hooking her finger around Lyra’s and giving it a couple of playful shakes.
“Hmm?” Lyra replied.
