Hide and Seek: The Mad Girl Sees All novel Chapter 170

Chapter 170

Clara blinked in surprise. “Why?”

Lyra looked at them. “We’ve been trying for over ten days, but Auntie still hasn’t changed much. The progress is too slow I want to see if switching to someone else might speed things up.”

Jane suddenly turned to Lyra, her eyes lighting up as she remembered Lyra’s initial guess.

“Lyra, are you thinking she might be the core of the Ghost Wall, which is why it’s taking so long to wake her up? Maybe try someone else, it’ll go faster?” Jane asked.

Lyra nodded. “If we can wake up even one of them, maybe we can get some info about the Ghost Wall from them.”

Lyra turned to the woman with the braid. “This could be our new breakthrough.”

Zoe couldn’t see the Ghost Wall, but as she listened to their conversation, she was piecing together Lyra’s reasoning.

More than ten days of sluggish recovery, far slower than a normal soul, proved the point. The Ghost Wall needed soul power to stay intact, and if someone was its core, most of her soul power would be drained to keep the wall up.

If that guess was right, waking up a non-core soul should be way quicker, and they could get answers fast.

Jane nodded at Lyra. “Exactly. If other souls wake up faster, that’d prove your aunt’s the core of the Ghost Wall, or at least she’s got a super important role.”

“Exactly.” Lyra replied.

Clara understood and didn’t ask anything else. She floated right over to the braided woman, lifted her hand, and pressed her palm against the crown of the woman’s head.

Lyra, Jane, and the other souls all stared intently.

As soul power poured in, the outline of the braided woman started to glow, little by little.

It was way faster than Auntie’s reaction! The ghost’s form was actually getting more solid, even if it was faint, you could see it getting stronger!

“She’s changing,” Ivana said, her voice tinged with excitement.

Once Clara was done, she looked at Lyra and pointed at Auntie. “Just like her, most of the soul power I sent in flowed into the ground, and only a little stayed inside. But honestly, more stayed with the braided woman than with Auntie.”

Jane suddenly turned to Lyra, her heart racing with excitement. “Lyra, you were right!”

Lyra turned and stared at the braided woman’s face. At this rate, there was a good chance they could wake her up before the next round of the game started.

“Let’s go! Time to recharge your energy!” Lyra called out.

They passed through the Ghost Wall and the mist, and the ground of the invasion zone came into view. The ruins up ahead were deserted.

Lyra glanced around. The outer zone had been swept so many times that the Wraiths who used to lurk everywhere were now just a few stragglers.

Not far away, one Wraith was sprawled on the ground, its head buried in the dirt, greedily sucking up spiritual energy from the earth.

Chapter 170

55 Vourner

A little farther off, two more were huddled behind a half-collapsed building, with just their black backs sticking out.

“Looks like this is all that’s left, Lyra said, holstering Wraithslayer at her waist as she turned to the four newbies.

Nancy was staring at the two Wraiths in the distance, not even blinking. Vivian leaned forward, lips pressed together, a hint of excitement on her face.

Lyra noticed that none of the four looked scared at all.

“Who’s going first?” Lyra asked.

As soon as she finished speaking, all four of them chimed in at once.

“I’ll go!”

“Reporting for duty, I’ll go first!”

“Let me take the first shot!”

“I’m up!”

All four called out at the same time. Nancy had already stepped forward, Claire’s palm was gathering flames, Vivian was leaning in, and Toni was no longer pretending to be calm, ready to move.

Zoe frowned. “Don’t fight over it.”

All four of them stopped in their tracks.

“Everyone gets a turn,” Zoe said, raising her hand and pointing at each of them in turn. “Nancy goes first, then Claire, then Vivian, and Toni last.”

“Go in order, one at a time. The rest, hold the line,” Zoe commanded.

“Yes, ma’am!” they all replied in unison.

Nancy took a deep breath, and the flame on her shoulder gave a little jump. She marched right up to the nearest Wraith.

The Wraith sprawled on the ground seemed to catch the noise. It lifted its head from the dirt, spotted an easy treat coming its way, and in the next second, launched itself at her with all four limbs.

Nancy’s pupils shrank, her heart shot up in her chest, but her hands never stopped moving. She gathered flames in her palm, snapped her wrist, sending a fireball straight into the Wraith’s skull.

The instant the orange-red flames hit, they punched a fist-sized hole through half its head, and black shards sprayed everywhere.

The Wraith let out a blood-curdling shriek.

Its body jerked violently, breaking its charge. It scrambled frantically on the ground, then turned tail and fled.

Nancy was stunned for a second. She knew Vital Flame could hurt Wraiths, but she never expected it to be so savage, one shot, right on target, and the Wraith was outta there.

The other two Wraiths heard their buddy’s scream and came barreling in from the distance, even faster than the first one.

Zoe was just about to say something when Claire and Vivian were already on the move.

Claire darted left. Vivian went right, each taking on a Wraith with quick, decisive moves.

Chapter 170

Nancy didn’t spare a glance at her teammates. Her eyes were locked on the Wraith in front of her, the one missing half its head, still trying to make a break for it.

She gathered another ball of flame in her palm, aimed for the Wraith’s leg, and hurled it.

The fireball slammed into the Wraith’s left leg and burned it off below the knee. The charred limb hit the ground, and the Wraith lurched and collapsed. Black tentacles shot from the wound, reaching for the severed leg to drag it back.

Nancy narrowed her eyes at the tentacles, recalling from the guide, the Wraith’s weak spot was in its head.

Vital Flame could burn through defenses and suppress regeneration, but to truly kill a Wraith, a soul had to absorb the energy core inside its head. Only then could it be destroyed for good.

Nancy wondered, ‘Is soul absorption the only way? What if I try something else?’

Nancy stepped forward, crouched down, and hovered her hands over its ruined skull. Vital Flame surged from her palms not just a fireball this time, but a wave of fire that engulfed its entire head.
