Chapter 179

The moment the mask snapped into place, the devil’s voice whispered in Lina’s ear again.
“Darkness answers your call once more. Tell me what you crave,” the voice whispered.
Lina forced herself to stay calm. She remembered everyone’s advice: make a wish that can be checked, but not the same as last time.
She spoke, her voice echoing dully through the mask. “I wish to know what the next mission in the game will be.
As soon as she said it, everyone in the three-way meeting room froze.
This wasn’t some trivial thing like Pumpkin Pie anymore.
This was about the game’s internal information.
Yelena’s face changed. She hadn’t expected Lina to make such a wish. The risk was too great.
Lyra’s brows furrowed as well. This wish went far beyond the “small matters” they had planned for.
Lina suddenly realized she’d let her eagerness get the better of her. Wanting so badly to help the team, she’d ended up asking that crucial question before she even knew it.
The mask fell into a long silence.
One second.
Two seconds.
Ten seconds.
Just when Lina was sure her wish had failed and the devil was ignoring her, that voice finally broke the silence.
“Granted, the voice said.
That single word made Lina’s heart pound in her chest.
“You must offer up an S Tier item, or ten years of your life. Do you agree?” the voice continued.
Ten years of her life!
Lina’s pupils shrank. That price was so steep, she couldn’t even imagine paying it.
She knew only she could hear the devil’s voice. Swallowing hard, Lina forced herself to speak up, loud and steady. “Just to confirm, if I sacrifice an S Tier item or ten years of my life, you’ll really tell me the answer?”
The mask stayed silent.
Yelena heard Lina’s voice and immediately shouted, “Lina! Refuse it!”
Lina’s back was drenched in cold sweat. She heard the devil confirm, and Yelena’s anxious voice echoed in her ears. Her mind was a mess.
Lyra’s voice cut in, sharp and clear, “Calm down!”
Her words blared through the speaker, hitting Lina like a shot of adrenaline.

Chapter 179
“Lina, stick to the plan. Ask if you can say no, Lyra said.
Lina took a deep breath and, voice trembling, asked the thing inside the mask, “Can I refuse?”
“A wish is a deal. Whether you accept it or not is up to you,” the voice replied.
Lina thought, I really can refuse!’ Relief washed over her.
But just as quickly, her nerves spiked again. She remembered the second question.
“If I refuse, do I have to pay a price?” Lina asked.
“You’ll have to pay the penalty for backing out of your wish,” the voice replied.
55
Lina raised her voice so everyone in the meeting room could hear. She asked the mask, “So I can refuse, but there’s a penalty for backing out, what exactly is that penalty?”
Lyra thought, ‘Here it comes, her eyes narrowing.
Lyra’s eyes narrowed. It sounded a little like a consultation fee: even if the deal fell through, she would still have to pay something.
“A D Tier item,” the voice replied.
Lina was stunned. A D Tier item, just for asking and then saying no? That was still a hefty price, but compared to ten years of her life or an S Tier item, a D Tier item suddenly seemed cheap in comparison.
“So the penalty for backing out is just a D Tier item, huh?” Lina said, a little surprised. “That’s not as bad as I thought.”
The mask stayed silent, almost as if it was thinking.
Lana reacted instantly, raising her voice, “Lina, ask if you can substitute something else!”
Lina quickly followed, her voice steady, “Can I use something else instead of a D Tier item?”
“Yes. The mask’s reply was crisp and direct.
“Offer up a memory, it has to be a deep one; or three days off your lifespan; or 200 ml of your blood; or an item of D Tier or higher, the mask continued.
This time, the mask spelled everything out so the wish-maker wouldn’t keep asking for confirmation. It thought. What a foolish wish-maker!”
“So I can offer up a deep memory, three days of my life, 200 ml of blood, or a higher-tier item instead?” Lina repeated, genuinely surprised.
The mask stayed silent, almost like it was considering her words.
A deep memory? The requirement creeped everyone out. The other options made sense, but why would it want a memory?
Lana pressed her pen into the paper, thinking through what they knew. She remembered the Cursed Forest: the ice tree had memories without a soul. If the System used memories to make Wraiths, was the mask doing the same?
Lyra stared at the screen and made her call right away. “Go with the D Tier item!”
“Looking at all the compensation options, the item is definitely the best deal!” Lyra said.
“Lina, don’t rush to refuse yet. Ask the Masked God if you can pick a different wish if you turn this one down, or how many wishes you can make in a day!” Lyra continued.

With the order given, Lina didn’t hesitate. “Dev… Masked God, how many wishes am 1 allowed per day? And if I make a wish but haven’t agreed to the deal yet, can I change my wish before it’s finalized?”
“Once. No, the mask replied.
