The large, cumbersome necklace was still around her neck. He kissed her hungrily, his lips hot against her skin.
“Elian, let me call Anya for you, okay?” she pleaded, fear creeping into her voice.
“Don’t be so thoughtful, Mrs. Locke.”
He lifted her slightly, his gaze searching hers, voice gravelly. “Remember the day before I left on that business trip? Before you found out about Theo? It was by the door, too.”
Liana’s face flushed with discomfort.
That day, she had believed he loved her. She had been passionate, eager.
But today, she knew the truth.
“Elian, we can’t go back. We-”

Her words were cut off as his mouth captured hers in a deep, consuming kiss.
He lifted her from the cabinet, his hands gripping her thighs as he carried her into the
apartment.
Her modest, firm bed-he had slept in it a few times before. But none of those nights held the raw, desperate edge of this one.
Even when she whispered, “Let me call a doctor, okay?”
“You are the only cure I need,” he growled.
Feeling utterly trapped and terrified for the baby, Liana forced her voice to soften. “Then… let me be on top.”
He allowed her to push him down onto the mattress. His memories were a blur; primal instinct had taken over, tempered only by the faintest thread of rationality reminding him of her fragility.
Seeing the feverish intensity in his reddened eyes, Liana knew she couldn’t possibly satisfy this state. I need to get away.
“Just wait here, be good. I need a glass of water.”
“Liar.”

She thought he was lying still, but the moment she tried to slip off the bed, a strong arm wrapped around her from behind, hauling her back to the center. He rolled over, pinning her beneath him once more.
Liana’s mind spun like crazy. Suddenly, she remembered the rock under her pillow-enough to knock him out?
She’d bought it for self-defense after a break-in.
She never imagined using it on him, but now, she was out of options. She tried softening first, playing along.
She wrapped him tight, murmured, “Elian, honey, slow down…”
Her soft beg broke something in him. Suddenly, he wasn’t a fierce hunter anymore-just a hurt, sulky boy.
He pressed his face to her neck, voice muffled and sad. “Honey, I missed you so much.”
Thud.
Elian woke the next morning with a throbbing headache and a sizable lump on his temple. He was in a hospital bed.
Liana was gone. Evan stood awkwardly by the bedside.
“What happened?” Elian demanded, his voice cold.
“Mrs. Locke called 911 for you last night,” Evan replied, not quite meeting his eyes.
Fragmented memories of the previous night surfaced.
She tricked me again with that act. How many times now?
“Where is she?” Elian asked.
“She was gone by the time I arrived this morning. She said…” Evan hesitated.
“Said what?” Elian pressed, irritation flaring.
“That she’ll be waiting for you at the courthouse.”
Evan looked as if he wished the floor would swallow him.
Elian glanced at his wristwatch. Just past ten. If she only went to retrieve their marriage

certificate this morning, it shouldn’t be processed that quickly.
There’s still time.
The thought brought a flicker of relief.
He noticed he was dressed in clean, proper clothes and frowned. “Who changed me?”
“Not me. Must have been Mrs. Locke.”
Evan felt his job security hanging by a thread.

Elian thought back. It was true-only the two of them had been there. The idea that she had taken care of him sent a strange warmth through him, quickly followed by a surge of frustration.
She knew I was drugged. She still refused me. Has she really stopped caring entirely?
His head pounded viciously. He swung his legs off the bed, a wave of dizziness hitting him.
Evan moved to help, but Elian waved him off, steadying himself.
He went to the bathroom, splashed cold water on his face, and gathered his composure.
Back in the room, he spotted his phone on the nightstand and immediately dialed Liana’s number.
