“Aren’t they already done?”
“There was still a couple ahead of them,” the man replied.

Anya stared at the disappearing Rolls-Royce, a wave of profound humiliation washing over her.
That woman, Liana…
Has Elian really fallen for her?
I was only gone for two years.
Back at the hospital, the two of them stood side-by-side in the elevator, one emanating an icy, imperious energy, the other silently praying.
The tall, imposing man broke the tense silence. “When Grandma wakes up, no matter what she asks, you tell her you still have feelings for me.”
Liana turned her tearful, questioning eyes toward him.
“You need to put her mind at ease. Nothing is more important right now than her recovery,” he pressed, seeing her reluctance.
Liana considered this and murmured, “I’ll handle it.”
“Handle it’? Like you ‘handled’ ignoring my mom’s call?”
“I thought she was trying to stop the divorce,” Liana retorted, a defensive itch of discomfort creeping in.

“So if we had divorced, you were truly prepared to cut ties with the family that cared for for over two years? When the Forrests sent you an invitation, my mom and grandma didn’t hesitate to give you their finest jewels and hire the best designer for you. And this is how you pay them back?”
“I…”
“Liana, you really do have a heart of stone.”
The elevator doors slid open as he finished speaking. He strode out immediately, as if utterly disappointed in her, as if she were no longer worthy of standing beside him.

Liana, finding herself unable to explain, gave up trying. She followed him out.
Rosalind was in the ICU. They couldn’t even go in to see her.
Linda stood by the doorway, tears in her eyes. Seeing them approach, she came forward and took Liana’s hands. “Is it done?”
“Linda, how is Grandma?” Liana asked, shaking her head, her own eyes welling up.
If something happened to Rosalind because of their divorce, she would never forgive herself.
“Heart failure, aggravated by the shock. They need to monitor her for a couple of days,” Linda explained, glancing at her son.
Elian’s face was cold. “I’m going to the director’s office,” he said evenly.
Linda said nothing, simply watched him go before gently wiping Liana’s tears.
She guided Liana to a row of chairs against the wall and sat down with her.
“Don’t blame yourself too much, sweetheart. Rosalind’s heart hasn’t been strong for years. This is part of aging; it just happened to coincide with your
divorce.”
“Linda, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have ignored your call.”
Liana’s voice was thick with guilt.
“I get it. It’s that brat’s fault-he broke your heart,” Linda soothed, pulling Liana into a comforting hug, patting her back.
Liana quickly wiped her tears. “I promise, no matter what happens, I’ll never ignore your calls again. You, David, Grandma, and Grandpa-you’re all my most important family in this world now. I swear that’s true.”
Seeing the calm young woman so earnest, so foolishly blaming herself tore at Linda’s heart all over again.
She cursed her son under her breath. That brat. Look what you’ve done.
And yes, Linda felt a sharp, unexpected guilt for Liana too.
That night, Liana insisted on staying at the hospital. In the deep quiet of the early hours, she sensed someone sitting down beside her. She turned.
The corridor was dimly lit, but the sharp lines of his face were clearly visible as he settled next to her.

He opened the insulated container he’d brought. It was filled with a savory, homemade soup.
The aroma hit her, and Liana realized she was starving. She took it from him.
She understood his anger-Rosalind was the one who adored him most. He had always been fiercely loyal to his family, showing immense respect even to her own mother.
Thinking of this, she ate the soup quietly, the last remnants of her resentment toward him dissolving.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed him scratching near his temple. She looked closer.
