“I almost thought they were going to stab each other with knives. Good luck, you’re on your
own.”
With that grim reminder, Lucas drove off.
Nathan took a deep breath, patted his briefcase, and strode toward the building. He didn’t want to go in, but he had no choice but to face the music.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Locke.”
“Mr. Locke.”
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Locke.”
“Hello, Mrs. Locke.”
Elian carried Liana through the bustling lobby, greeted by a chorus of stunned, delayed salutations from employees.
Hearing “Mrs. Locke,” Liana felt only profound awkwardness. What kind of Mrs. Locke am I?
She didn’t even receive the most basic respect.
Too many eyes were on them. Instinctively, she tried to hide her face against his chest.
“Mrs. Locke, you’d better not hide in my arms. Wouldn’t want to make you nauseous again.” His voice was low and cutting. “Next time you retch, it might be blood. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for that.”
Liana already knew it looked wrong. After that jab, she could only duck her head and stay still.
Nathan didn’t join them in the private executive elevator, deliberately hanging back and taking the staff elevator instead.
The elevator walls were glass. Liana, once carried inside, had assumed they were opaque. A glance outside made her immediately burrow back against him, trying to stay calm as she whispered, “You can put me down now.”
Elian looked down at her, an expression of sheer disinterest on his face as he set her on her feet.
Liana moved to the side, using one hand to tuck the stray hairs that had fallen from behind her ear, the other gripping the handrail tightly.

Out of the corner of his eye, Elian noticed how she was putting as much distance between them as the small space allowed. A surge of murderous rage flared, but he restrained it.
The elevator finally reached the top floor. While it wasn’t Liana’s first time here, the reception staff were new faces.
“Hello, Mr. Locke, Mrs. Locke.”
“Hello.”
Though the title “Mrs. Locke” felt ill-fitting now, Liana responded politely nonetheless.
Elian said nothing, striding ahead.
“Mrs. Locke, what would you like to drink?” Yvonne asked.
“Just water, please. Thank you,” Liana replied.
“Of course.”
Yvonne nodded, and her assistant hurried off to fetch it.
The door to the CEO’s office swung open. The air inside felt heavy and oppressive.
Liana had already been puking. The moment she stepped in, she felt worse.
“Please have a seat, Mrs. Locke. Let me know if you need anything. I’ll be right outside,” Yvonne said, wisely choosing not to intrude further.
Liana gave her a slight nod, and Yvonne promptly closed the door behind her.
Suddenly, the vast office contained only the two of them.
Knowing Nathan would be up soon, Liana saw no point in hollow pleasantries. She simply found a seat and sat down.
Elian stood behind his desk, flipping through files. His peripheral vision caught her sitting down. He gave her a long, deliberate look, then pressed the intercom. “Have the catering department send up some pastries.”
“Yes, sir.”
Yvonne’s voice came through immediately before she called to place the order.
Liana heard but didn’t ask. If he offered food, she’d eat. If not, she could manage,

Just then, her phone buzzed in her bag. She took it out and saw it was Quentin. She answered, “Quentin.”
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I’ll be back at school later,” Liana said.
“Not rushing you. Just glad you’re alright,” Quentin clarified quickly, not wanting her to misunderstand, and hung up.
Liana set her phone down. By chance, she noticed Elian seemed to be glaring at her and looked up at him.
His eyes held an unconcealed, murderous intensity.
Puzzled, Liana decided the best course was to avoid provoking anything. She chose silence.
Nathan took longer than expected to appear.
Liana glanced at her watch. Ten minutes had passed.
Outside in the secretary’s area, Nathan was saying to Yvonne, “You think I don’t want to go You’re right. I don’t.”
in?
Ever since his damnable mistake-thinking Elian wanted a divorce, drafting the papers, giving them to Elian, and then having Liana find out-their divorce had become his problem.
Divorce law wasn’t his specialty, but it should have been straightforward to wrap up.
But then the boss declared he didn’t want a divorce and nearly killed him for the mess.
