Yvonne couldn’t help a quick laugh, then bent her head and got back to work.

Liana was sipping from the glass of water an assistant had brought in. Seeing Nathan enter, she couldn’t resist asking, “Were you tied up, Mr. Chase?”
“Oh, uh, yeah. Just a long call about a dispute case,” Nathan quickly fabricated an excuse.
Liana didn’t press further, simply waiting for him to begin.
Elian had said there was an issue with the divorce agreement.
After Nathan explained to Liana, he glanced toward Elian, who sat behind his desk with a severe expression, immersed in paperwork. Nathan’s brows pulled tight with unease.
“What exactly is the issue with our divorce agreement?” Liana asked, not wanting to drag this
out.
“Yes, there’s one remaining point,” Nathan said, his eyes darting toward Elian again.
Elian finally looked up, his gaze disapproving. “Why do you keep looking at me? Are the words written on my face?”
Trapped, Nathan forced an air of calm as he walked over and sat beside Liana.
He offered an awkward smile, then blurted out, “Actually, I think it would be just fine if you two didn’t divorce. I can testify-Mr. Locke and Anya absolutely have nothing going on.”
“Your information seems limited, Mr. Chase,” Liana said, her voice gentle, a soft smile on her lips. “Just the other day, I personally saw Anya emerge from his bedroom wearing a bathrobe.”
Nathan’s mouth fell open. It took him a long moment before he could turn a look of utter disbelief toward Elian.
Elian’s face was dark. He shot Nathan a glare that could kill.
Nathan realized he’d just stirred the hornet’s nest. He nervously licked his lips, mentally cursing himself. Think, you idiot. Think!
“Ahem, that… that might have been a misunderstanding,” he said, leaning slightly closer to Liana and lowering his voice. “Mr. Locke is… picky about that kind of thing.”
Liana was a half-beat slow to react, but she listened calmly. Understanding his implication, she merely replied in a soft tone; “Mr. Chase, this time, it was Mr. Locke who requested the divorce. We’re only waiting for this agreement to finalize it.”

Nathan thought Liana was the type who smiled while hiding a blade.
She seemed reasonable, but she could destroy you without lifting a finger.
“I see. Well, if you’re set on divorcing, there’s another expense I think you’ll need to settle,” Nathan said, knowing any attempt to plead Elian’s case was futile now.
Liana listened attentively, waiting for him to continue.
What other fees could there be for a divorce?
Legal fees?
She remembered telling him to bill Elian for those. She certainly couldn’t afford them.
Nathan quickly pulled a hospital invoice from his briefcase and placed it before Liana.
“This is the summary of expenses for your mom’s hospital stay. As the wife of the Locke heir, this debt naturally wouldn’t require repayment. However, if you divorce, before you and Mr. Locke go your separate ways, it would be best to settle this amount to avoid any lingering entanglements in the future.”
Liana picked up the document and looked it over. “Can’t we divorce first? I won’t default on the debt.”
“No,” Nathan replied confidently, certain from her expression she couldn’t pay.
Liana’s gaze shifted to the man behind the desk who still refused to look up, then down to the total at the bottom of the final page.
“I’ll do my best to gather the amount within the next few days,” she said, taking the invoice and standing up.
Nathan hadn’t expected her to leave.
The fancy pastries on the table remained untouched.
And that wasn’t his point at all-he didn’t actually want her to pay.
Instinctively, he shot a pleading look toward Elian. But all he saw was the imperious, king-like aura emanating from his boss, a pressure so intense it felt suffocating.
“Mrs. Locke, I’m only available today. First thing tomorrow morning-no, tonight-I have to fly abroad on business. I’ll be gone for at least three months.”
Nathan hurriedly stood, blocking her path with a blatant lie.
