Liana shot him a resentful look.
“A total liability,” he muttered coldly.

Liana wasn’t sure who he was cursing. Her gaze drifted back to the hospital admission form on the table. She picked it up and walked over to Elian’s desk.
“We can’t keep putting off the divorce. What if I leave my salary card with you? Would that work?”
“What would I want with your salary card? All I want is a clean break with you.”
Elian’s voice was icy.
But when he looked up and saw the tears welling in her reddened eyes, a wave of intense irritation crashed over him.
Just last week, she didn’t get sick when I touched her. What the hell is wrong today? Why this reaction now?
Is it because she saw Anya in a bathrobe in my room that day?
“Elian, I need the divorce.”
“Didn’t
your precious Quentin just call you? Ask him for the money. He wouldn’t refuse you. Pay me back, and I’ll sign the divorce papers immediately.”
He still refused to budge.
Reading the cold detachment in his eyes, Liana knew pleading was useless. “Fine,” she said, her voice flat.
She turned and walked out without another word.
The moment she stepped out of his office, a loud bang erupted inside.
Her steps faltered for a second, but she quickly squared her shoulders and strode toward the elevators.
Yvonne noticed Liana’s pallor and hurried after her. “Mrs. Locke, are you alright?”
Liana tried to answer, but her throat tightened. She could only manage a weak nod.
She pressed the elevator button and leaned against the wall as she waited, then again as she

Shooting a worried glance toward the CEO’s office, Yvonne followed her into the elevator.
Liana felt lightheaded, her eyes burning. Not wanting anyone to see her vulnerability, she slid down against the handrail, burying her face in the crook of her arm resting on her knees.
Yvonne didn’t speak, just stood quietly beside her.
Women always seem to get the short end of the stick in marriage.
Yvonne thought bitterly, her own memories of her husband’s betrayal with a postpartum care nurse surfacing. Life just isn’t fair.
When the elevator finally reached the lobby, Yvonne helped Liana up and guided her out, calling Lucas. “Come help take Mrs. Locke home.”
“I’m already here.” Lucas’ voice came through the phone.
Yvonne was puzzled but didn’t question it. She tucked her phone away and offered Liana more
support.
Liana gently pushed her hand away, giving her a grateful, strained smile, and walked out alone.
In the end, you’re always alone.
It’s just a divorce.
He doesn’t need those few million dollars.
Yet he insists on making this difficult for me.
How can someone be so despicable?
Liana felt she no longer knew the man named Elian. He was a stranger.
Stumbling toward the exit, her legs gave way just as she reached the door.
Lucas, waiting outside, rushed forward to steady her. “Mrs. Locke, are you okay?”
“Doesn’t look like it, does it?” she replied weakly, attempting a
a joke.
Soon after, she was back at her small apartment on Riverview Avenue. Dusk had fallen, and heavy raindrops began to pelt the windows.
She didn’t look back, but she heard the rain.

The moment she got home, the last of her strength left her, and she collapsed into unconsciousness.
Right before she lost consciousness, she saw her mother.

When she woke, it was dark.
Lily was sitting by her bed.
Quentin was in the kitchen, fixing her something to eat.
“The doctor said you have low blood sugar. He also said if you don’t start taking better care of yourself, you might not be able to carry this pregnancy to term,” Lily said, her tone deliberately stern out of concern.
Tears immediately spilled from Liana’s eyes in a defiant rush. As Lily reached out to wipe them, her finger barely brushing Liana’s cheek, a sob finally broke free.
“Liana,” Lily whispered, genuine worry creeping into her voice.
Liana just buried her face against Lily’s leg, her body shaking with quiet, stifled cries.
Later, Liana explained Elian’s demand.
“I have money! Not that much, but we can pool what we have,” Lily said immediately, pulling out her phone to check her bank app.
She had saved up a decent sum over the years. Her family wasn’t wealthy, but she hardly spent her own salary, and her parents often helped out.
“I’ll get the rest for you tomorrow,” Quentin added from the doorway.
If returning that three million dollars was all it took to get Elian to agree to the divorce, then things were simpler than they seemed.
