For a fleeting moment, something shifted in the cold depths of Elian’s eyes.

Tears welled in hers as she looked up at him, her hands clutching helplessly at the fabric of his shirt. “Elian, please… stop humiliating me. If you’ll just agree to the divorce, I’ll anything you want.”

When she had stepped closer, a foolish part of him had hoped for reconciliation. Her words crushed that hope instantly.

A flicker of loss passed through his dark gaze before it hardened again, giving way to a crude demand, his voice low and laced with bitter disbelief. “Then take off your clothes. Right now. Show me you mean it.”

Though his words were heavy with suppressed emotion, to Liana, they were pure humiliation. Fresh tears traced her cheeks.

“Can we… finalize the divorce first?” she attempted to negotiate.

“What? For him, it was a simple transaction, but with me, you set conditions?”

Elian’s voice trembled with a corrosive jealousy.

The mere thought of her selling herself for a paltry three million dollars drove him toward madness.

Liana felt utterly helpless. Her recent physical condition had left her weak. If she were in better health, she wouldn’t hesitate for a second.

“You know,” he said, his voice dropping dangerously, “the longer you hesitate, the more I want to ruin him. Believe it or not, I can kick him out of Alderidge right now. I—”

He saw the resentment in her eyes, and it infuriated him further.

“No!” Liana cut him off, realizing the severity.

“No? No what? Are you saying that three million didn’t come from selling yourself to him?”

The interruption caught him off guard, but a sudden, sharp pang in his chest made him grip her shoulders tightly, demanding an answer.

“Yes.”

The single word was wrenched from her.

If he squeezed any harder, she’d black out again.

“Yes… Liana, believe me, I can destroy him right now.”

His heart plummeted into an abyss, a reckless, scorched-earth fury taking hold.

“It’s not as you said, Elian. There’s nothing between Quentin and me.” She forced the words out.

“How can I believe you?” he fired back instantly, his piercing gaze scrutinizing her every micro- expression.

“You can trace the money. If I’m lying about this, may I die a terrible death.”

Finally, she managed to string the sentence together, though her voice was broken.

The stone wall around Elian’s heart finally softened into something pliable. Yet, looking at her tear-streaked face, he deliberately said, “No crying. Give me a smile.”

Liana tried to twist her lips into something resembling a smile.

“Ugly smile,” he criticized.

Liana thought he was sick.

But then, his warm hands came up to cup her face, his thumbs gently brushing away the tears.

Liana stood there, dazed, allowing the gesture.

She didn’t understand how they had gotten to this point.

He was never the type to be cruel, to mock, to strip someone of their dignity. He was always the steady, pragmatic, man of few words.

But lately…

No matter how gently Elian wiped, new tears kept falling.

He stopped, looking at her with genuine confusion.

“Why won’t the tears stop?” he asked, his voice low and gravelly as he held her face, demanding

an answer.

He needed to understand this.

“It hurts,” the two words slipped out before she even realized she was speaking.

“Where?” Elian asked, his gaze searching.

Liana looked up at him, her voice trembling and faint. “My heart.”

Elian’s eyes dropped for a second and looked back at her intently.

“I never wanted to be your burden. And I was never angry that you kept so much from me, Elian. I’ve always been grateful that you were with me through the hardest times.”

The words continued to flow from her, slow and steady.

Even now, she didn’t want them to be enemies.

Their marriage had begun so suddenly, yet so quietly. She believed they could part ways with civility.

“Besides Theo, I haven’t kept anything from you,” Elian stated.

“Really? You didn’t know Anya and I are half-sisters?” Liana asked softly.

His gaze darkened.

“Why did you marry me? Wasn’t it because I look like Anya? Because I was her substitute?” The more she spoke, the more her spirit seemed to crumble to dust.

“Who told you I think of you as Anya’s substitute?” Elian asked, genuinely taken aback.

“Am I wrong? Was our ‘chance’ meeting at that matchmaking event really just a coincidence?”

“Of course not,” he replied bluntly.

Liana’s tears finally ran dry. Seeing he realized he’d slipped, she only asked, soft and tired, “Can we please go get the divorce? I’m begging you.”

A chaotic frustration churned inside Elian. He released her, turning to walk over to the desk. He looked down, flipping aimlessly through a magazine as if suddenly very busy.

“Or… would you prefer to take me to see your bedroom with Anya first?” Liana asked, feeling utterly out of options.

Elian’s hand stilled on the page. He turned his head, giving her a cold look.

“Do whatever you want to humiliate me. Just agree to the divorce,” Liana pressed on.

Instead, Elian closed the magazine with a snap. Then, in one fluid motion, he strode toward her.

“Fine. I’ll show you our room.”
