:.

Elian strode up to her, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her out of the room.

Liana felt lightheaded, her legs so weak she nearly stumbled as he dragged her along.

Elian stopped. Without a word, he wrapped an arm around her waist and hoisted her over his shoulder.

Liana’s mind buzzed. She wanted to protest, but the tightness in her chest stole her voice.

Elian carried her down the hall, pausing at each doorway and yanking them open one by one.

He finally stopped at the entrance to a master bedroom, set her down in front of a walk-in closet, and slid the door open with one hand. He didn’t step inside.

“I don’t

go into women’s closets. Look for yourself. If you find a single piece of my clothing in there, I’ll sign the divorce papers right now.”

Leaning against the wall for support, Liana glanced at the bed. It was clearly a young woman’s

room.

She didn’t look at him again, turning her gaze directly into the closet.

Inside were rows of beautiful, youthful clothes.

With effort, she stepped in and pushed open a closed wardrobe door.

Inside, hanging neatly, was a full rack of men’s suits. They all looked like the clothes Elian wore.

Liana turned her head to look at him.

“Mr. Locke.”

He’d been so confident letting her look. She’d assumed he was meticulous about keeping up appearances, separating his clothes from his lover’s even in their love nest.

“What?”

He looked toward the closet, his previously triumphant expression shifting to one of sharp disbelief.

Yes. There were men’s clothes inside.

He strode in, grabbed a jacket at random, and held it up. It was one he’d worn just a couple of

months ago.

“We can go get the divorce now, right?” Liana asked flatly.

Elian stared at his own jacket in his hand, then suddenly let out a low, humorless laugh.

Seeing he had no room for denial, Liana pressed on, “You said if I found a single piece of your clothing, we’d go immediately.”

He let the fabric drop and simply shook his head, chuckling to himself.

A flicker of unease shot through Liana.

Why is he laughing?

“Elian, are you trying to weasel out of it again?”

The bad feeling settled in her gut.

This wasn’t the first time.

He’d always found some excuse or another..

Apart from when his grandmother fainted, something always seemed to come up at the last minute.

“Yes.”

The admission came out, sharp and frustrated.

A hundred other things swirled in his mind, but for now, with her standing there accusing him, he owned this one thing.

“You liar. You bastard.”

The words were pushed out slowly, fueled by a deep-seated resentment.

He’d always been a man of his word before.

She’d never known he could be this petty.

Watching her wounded eyes, Elian suddenly smirked, lazy and defiant-like he’d decided to go down swinging.

“Since I’m already the villain in your story, I might as well show you how low I can go. Let me be honest. I don’t have a separate room here. But I could make one today.”

Before Liana could process his meaning, he closed the distance again, his hand finding her

waist.

Afraid he’d hoist her over his shoulder once more, she stumbled backward.

And landed squarely inside the dark depths of an open

wardrobe.

Anya’s?

But these clothes didn’t quite look like Anya’s style.

Did he and Anya have some prep-school fantasy going on?

As Liana fell in, Elian instinctively reached to pull her back, but…

The wardrobe was deeper than he’d thought.

As she tumbled onto the clothes inside, Elian, his hand braced on the doorframe beside her shoulder, lost his balance and fell in after her.

It was dark. So dark they couldn’t see each other’s faces. A darkness that made hearts pound.

The air between them grew unbearably charged.

Liana’s ears were still ringing until she gradually felt the weight of another person settling over her.

Elian lowered himself on top of her, slowly.

His hand brushed aside the damp strands of hair clinging to her temple, his voice a low, resonant murmur close to her ear. “Liana.”

She lay there stiffly, confused by the frantic, disobedient beating of her own heart.

Embarrassed, she turned her face away, her throat too tight to make a sound.

“Let’s not get divorced, okay?” he coaxed, his voice soft against her skin.

“No.”

Her answer was immediate. As she spoke, her gaze caught on a fluttery, floral-print dress hanging nearby. She was oddly drawn to it.

She’d never worn anything so bold and flowery. She’d always been conservative.

It wasn’t that she didn’t own dresses or skirts, but they were always simple, understated.

Suddenly, this kind of vibrant, playful clothing seemed beautiful.

“Do you like that style?” she asked, the question escaping her almost without thought.

“Hmm?”

Elian was still reeling from her swift, firm rejection, her question catching him completely off guard.

For so long now, her only topic with him had been divorce. He thought he’d misheard.

He followed her line of sight to the dress behind them, then looked back at her, his gaze dropping to the delicate curve of her collarbone.

“This is Theo’s nanny’s room. It’s the only room in the house with younger women’s clothes. Anya moved out of Westhaven Estates a while ago.”

Still, the fact that she was thinking about dresses while he was sprawled on top of her? That stung his pride, hard.
