Looking down absently, she saw his gaze fixed on the open collar of her nightgown. She quickly raised a hand to cover it.
Elian’s charming eyes flicked back to her face. She felt soft and smelled sweet. Remembering she’d left divorce papers and moved out, he suddenly bit down on her collarbone.
Liana gasped in pain. Elian immediately released the bite, soothing the spot with his lips.
She tried to push him, to tell him to stop, but Nathan’s hesitant voice came through the phone.
“Elian, I’m out of town.”
“It’s Liana.”
Liana found Nathan’s tone odd but introduced herself first.
“Oh. Um, what can I do for you, Liana?”
Nathan’s usual condescension was gone.
Liana blinked, a sharp light flashing in her eyes. She asked seriously, “Mr. Locke said he yelled at you about the divorce papers and feels bad. He wants to invite you over for dinner sometime.”
At these words, Elian’s eyes narrowed as he looked up at her.
Liana held her breath, her face flushed from the unfamiliar act of lying.
“Uh, about that, I haven’t actually given him the divorce papers yet.”
Nathan’s voice was cautious.
“You haven’t?”
Liana frowned, looking down at the man holding her.
Elian raised an eyebrow in amusement, glancing around the room, guessing which door led to the bedroom.
“No. My desk’s been a mess lately. Had my assistant shred some old documents. I think your divorce papers might have been in that pile.”
Liana’s mind buzzed.
Shredded?
“Liana, I’m driving. I’m gonna hang up, okay?”
“Sure,” Liana replied numbly, still reeling.
Suddenly, Elian lifted her up.
She felt weightless for a second. When her senses returned, her arms were wrapped around his neck.
Elian’s dark gaze held hers. “Actually, I came to apologize.”

To be honest, getting that signed divorce agreement the minute he got back hadn’t felt good.
That morning, when she suddenly made breakfast for everyone, he knew she wanted out. That’s why he used the “business trip” excuse to get away. But then she called him at the airport.
Yeah, he’d panicked that day.
He was terrified she’d just blurt out, “Let’s get a divorce when you’re back.”
Plus, he’d seen another man’s comforting messages on her WhatsApp. That’s when he’d said what he said.
Liana was still holding the folic acid bottle after being sick. Her bathroom was tiny-the sink took up most of the room, with just a toilet and shower crammed in.
A small trash can sat under the sink. Feeling a shadow at the door, she quickly let go.
The bottle dropped right in. She pulled a tissue, wiped her mouth, and tossed it in, perfectly covering the bottle.
Elian stood in the doorway, watching her pale face. “Do you need to see a gastroenterologist?”
Liana was caught off guard but answered quickly, “I’ve been feeling much better lately.”
Elian leaned against the doorframe, a ring pinched between his fingers, his’ eyes narrowed as he watched
her.
Annoyance boiled inside him. She’s fine when I’m not around?
