“Let’s get a divorce. She was meant to be Mrs. Locke.”
“We’ll talk about us later. We do need to talk.”
Elian looked at her heavily for a few seconds, then turned and left.

Liana refused to let herself feel hurt over it. After he walked out, she glanced at the folic acid bottle, not fully hidden in the trash. Then she heard his footsteps returning.
She spun around nervously. “What?”
He caught the way she flinched from him like he was contagious and said quietly, “Wear the ring until the divorce is final. We have to go to the Manor tomorrow.”
He placed the ring on the sink counter and left. A dark thought crossed his mind. Maybe I should just let her go.
Liana let out a silent sigh of relief only after hearing the apartment door close. She looked at the ring, so close to her left hand. Her finger hovered over it, presse down, then pulled back-again and again.
She hadn’t expected him to find her so easily.
Would he discover the pregnancy just as quickly?
The morning sickness had been less severe these last few days. Would it keep getting better?
She hoped so, but then her mind buzzed with another thought.
Anya said the abortion pills were from Elian. But just now, Elian didn’t seem…
Right. He didn’t seem to know she was pregnant.
She’d been too flustered to think about the pills earlier. Now, the more she thought, the more something felt off.
Was Anya the only one who knew?
A sudden urge to figure this out took hold. Just then, he phone rang. She pushed the tangled thoughts aside and went back to the bedroom to answer.
It was Tina Hart, the junior high vice principal.
“Ms. Hart.”
“I’ve been mulling this over for a long time, and I should tell you. During the state civil service exam, the reason you failed the interview was that someone pulled strings.”
Tina’s voice came through the receiver.
Liana’s mind raced.
She remembered the application form. Under “Father,” he’d written “Not applicable.”
“Have you offended someone?” Tina added cautiously.
Liana mentally scanned through anyone who might want to block her civil service path.

Truth was, she’d wanted to get to know Liana for a while She felt a connection with the girl, who just always seemed to avoid her.
“Okay, goodbye.”
Liana loved the vibe at school. People treated each other fairly. None of the backstabbing drama you heard about online. Her colleagues all got along well.
But she had planned to leave.
She was processing some paperwork for studying abroad. It would take a while, so she’d rented this small apartment for two months.

She glanced again at the cracked Suddenly, she didn’t want to leave anymore.
She was born here, raised here-why should she be the one to run?
All she did was fall in love with the wrong man and get pregnant. She was just that man’s daughter he’d never acknowledged.
She hadn’t committed some unforgivable sin.
