Anya, hearing Liana refuse, secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She stepped forward, taking Theo’s little hand with a pouty, wounded look. “Were you going to give my son to Liana? Theo is my whole heart. I’d rather die than give him away.”

Seeing Anya’s eyes well up, Elian sighed, “I was just letting them say hello.”

“I’ll be late for work. Goodbye.”

Liana had no desire to stand with them any longer. She got into her old car and drove away.

After she left, Anya looked at Elian again. “Elian, please don’t separate me from Theo. I’m begging you.”

“What’s this all about?” Elian’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. He finished speaking and got into the car with Theo.

A bad feeling settled over Anya. She couldn’t help but glance in the direction Liana’s car had gone.

Was the baby gone? What did they talk about during those hours together? She could only wait and react.

She didn’t know if Liana had gotten rid of her baby, or what she and Elian had talked about in those few hours. All she could do was play it by ear.

10:30 AM, at the teacher’s office of Summit High School Lily, having heard about the broken window, brought Liana coffee to comfort her.

“Could it be that woman of Elian’s? Trying to force you into a divorce?” Lily was blunt, saying whatever came to mind.

“No proof.”

Liana also thought of Anya, but without evidence, suspicion was useless.

She understood why Anya gave her the abortion pills. No woman wanted her man to have a child with someone else.

Just like her. Every time she heard him mention Theo, i felt like someone was dragging a knife across her heart for fun. The person wielding the knife enjoyed it, oblivious to the river of blood she was drowning in.

“Ms. Keane, there are two elderly visitors here to see you.”

Someone knocked on the office door. It was the principal.

Liana and Lily both looked out curiously. The principal looked at Lily. “Ms. Clark, could you step out for a moment?”

The two elders walked in. Lily, surprised, came out and asked the principal, “Who are they?”

“Not your concern. Wait here and keep other teachers from going in for now,” The principal said flatly and left.

Lily couldn’t help but peek inside again. The old couple probably couldn’t do much to Liana, so she stayed by the door to wait.

The old woman closed the door herself. Only the three of them remained.

Liana saw who it was and slowly stood up.

It was-

Anya’s grandfather, Gerald Forrest, and grandmother, Harriet Forrest.

Gerald pulled up a chair and sat down, his eyes fixed on her.

Harriet’s t

gaze held a trace of emotion. “Your father has two other children, but you’re the one who looks

most like him.”

Liana’s heart clenched. When she was eight, she found the Forrest house herself. Gerald chased her out with a stick, shouting, “Get out of here, you little bastard! Don’t stand at my door! I’ll have you sent to juvenile hall!”

She’d never forgotten the look of utter disgust on his face, as if she were a disease. She never stepped foot near the Forrest house again.

“Why are you telling her this? We’re here today to get her to divorce Elian.” Gerald didn’t want to hear sentimentality.

Even though they’d never shown her a shred of warmth their words still managed to hurt her.

“Yes, we’re here about the divorce. But she is our eldest granddaughter, after all. Liana, would you come home with me?” Gerald looked at her, coaxing.

“No,” Liana said quietly.

“Hmph. You don’t know what’s good for

you.

at this school.” Gerald’s tone was threatening.

Divorce Elan immediately, or I’ll make sure you lose your job

This time, Liana didn’t flee in fear. She met his gaze bravely. “You can try. Fire me today, and I’ll file a grievance tomorrow.”
