Except for those few times we slept together.
The bed was warm. She opened her eyes, and as she turned, she accidentally pressed the remote on the bedside table. The blackout curtains slowly parted, letting in shafts of morning sunlight.
Liana raised a hand to shield her eyes. Her phone on the nightstand began to ring. Squinting against the light, she grabbed it and sat up. “Hello?”
“You’re still sleeping? Quick, check the news! Anya’s been exposed!”
“What?”
“I bet it was your husband. Late last night, Anya’s apartment got trashed. And guess what? She was in bed with Jett, both of them completely naked, when it happened…”
It was Lily, her voice buzzing with excitement.
Liana listened, stunned. After Lily hung up, she opened a news app. The headline was right there.
A grainy photo showed Anya and Jett, half-covered by a sheet, both topless, their faces a mix of shock and panic.
Another photo showed Anya slumped on the floor of her vandalized apartment, now dressed.
Jett sat on the couch, head in his hands, crushed. He couldn’t stop glancing at her. “I’ve made three calls, but they all said it can’t be pulled.”
“I want her dead.” Anya’s fingers twisted in the fabric of her dress, her eyes brimming with pure hatred.
Jett, not catching her muttered words, asked, “What did you say?”
“I said, I want her dead.” Anya turned to look at him, enunciating each word clearly this time.
Jett’s heart leapt into his throat. If he understood correctly, she meant killing Liana.
“No way.” Jett shot to his feet, pushing back hard.
“Why not? If it weren’t for her, I’d be Mrs. Locke by now Elian and I would have children together!”
“That’s not true. Xander told me-Elian liked that woman from the start. Back in school, he had a crush on Liana,” Jett tried to explain.
“I’ve known Elian since I was born! Liana looks so much like me! Tell me-did he really have a crush on Liana, or was it because my dad got reassigned out of Alderidge and Elian used her as a substitute for me?” Anya laughed, a bitter, righteous sound.
“What?” Jett sounded honestly shocked.
“Jett,” Anya said, her gaze fixed on him. “You promised you’d always be loyal to me.”
Jett didn’t doubt her, but a deep unease settled in.
What did Anya plan to do next?

“No. If Elian found out, he’d never forgive us.” Jett thought it over again and shook his head firmly.
Intimidation and kidnapping-those were one thing. But murder? Absolutely not. He still had a shred of sanity left.
Anya’s eyes filled with sudden tears, a look of utter disappointment aimed at him. “If you won’t do it, someone else will. But after this, we’ll have no reason to see each other again.”
Jett stared at her, horrified.
“I’m getting rid of this baby, too,” Anya added with chilling resolve.
“No! That’s our baby!”
“No? You want me to give birth so he can grow up knowing his dad’s a useless loser?” Anya shot back.
Jett’s mind buzzed. He had no idea what to do.
He couldn’t let his child think he was a loser.
But murder means prison.

He looked at Anya, thought of how he’d idolized her since they were kids, how desperately he loved her. He had to ask, “Is there no other way?”
“You know perfectly well there are plenty of men who’d do anything for me,” Anya whispered, a note of sick pride in her reminder.
“I understand,” Jett finally said, his voice hollow. He turned and walked out.
Once Jett was gone, Anya stood up and walked slowly to the window. “Liana,” she murmured to the glass. “It’s
you or me.”
Downstairs in the living room, Elian was working. His phone rang. He glanced at the screen-Anya.
He rejected the call without a second thought and continued his video conference.
Liana walked out of the bedroom to find Elian already dressed in crisp trousers and a shirt, standing behind the sofa, conducting a meeting.
A projector screen showed several of his subordinates.
After the call ended, Yvonne spoke up. “Mr. Locke, Mr. Forrest’s secretary called. Mr. Forrest would like to visit the headquarters for an inspection this morning.”
“Decline. Pass along my message directly,” Elian replied, ending the call as he noticed Liana coming down
