Her heart was pounding wildly.

She’d known since childhood that life required telling some lies, but she never imagined it would require so

Beneath her phone lay her 4D ultrasound printout, the image of the tiny fetus now clearly visible.

The doctor had said the baby was a bit small, that she needed to eat more.

“The procedure is finished. It’s too late for regrets now,” the doctor said before leaving.

Liana felt a pang of sorrow, understanding now why Che was crying.

“I’m going to pay for this. I ended a life,” Chloe sobbed.

“No. This child just wasn’t meant to be with you. Don’t cry,” Liana said, unsure how to comfort her, just wiping her tears away.

“What expression do you think Mr. Locke would have if he saw this?”

“No idea.”

As Liana saw the wistful look in Chloe’s eyes as she stared at the image, her outstretched hand dropped back

down.

“Bet it would be priceless,” Chloe said.

The elevator reached the first floor. The doors slid open

Chloe stopped joking, but as she looked up, her soul nearly left her body. The printout fell from her hand, landing on the floor.

Elian was standing right outside the elevator, supporting a pale-faced Anya

“Liana? What are you doing here?” Anya asked, sounding startled and strangely guilty, as if caught in the act.

Liana ignored her, her focus entirely on Elian, who had looked down.

Both Liana and Chloe held their breath. Chloe, in too much pain to bend over, could only watch in horror as the paper landed at Elian’s feet, her heart hammering in her throat.
