Soon after, he went to the kitchen, standing behind her as she washed the vegetables. An involuntary warmth spread in his chest.
Last time, if it hadn’t been for that severe fever, they probably would have already signed the papers at the courthouse.
Liana was filling a pot with water, her mind strangely blank, as if stuffed with cotton. When his arms circled her waist from behind, she instinctively tensed. “You can go wait for the food.”
“I’ll help,” Elian murmured.
His tall, imposing frame pressed against her from behind, one long arm reaching around her waist, easily encircling her.
Yes, a little fuller, but still slender.
For some reason, Elian didn’t dare hold her too tight.
The 4D ultrasound image flashed in his mind again.
Liana. Fetus…
He couldn’t help but rest his chin on her slender shoulder, his voice low. “Liana, we’re having a baby, aren’t we?”
A buzzing filled Liana’s ears. She stared blankly as the water threatened to overflow the pot before snapping back to reality and turning off the tap.
She said, “No. I was there with Chloe.”
“That makes no sense. She didn’t look pregnant,” he said softly, holding her a little tighter.
“What does ‘pregnant’ look like? You seen it? Or did Anya really get knocked up with your kid?”
Liana turned around, her clear eyes fixed directly on him.
This time, she knew she had to make it sharp, make it sting.
Elian looked into her cool eyes and suddenly smiled, “Even if Anya were pregnant, it wouldn’t be mine.”
Liana shot back, “Yeah? Sounds like you’re disappointed Mr. Locke.”
Elian felt the sting of her words but suppressed it.
The thought that she might be four months pregnant made it impossible for him to get angry.
“I’d only be disappointed if you weren’t pregnant.”
Elian’s deep eyes bore into her, wishing at this moment he could see right into her womb to discern the truth.
“The next Mrs. Locke surely won’t disappoint you,” Liana said, turning back to the stove.
But Elian pressed against her again.

A heavy gloom pressed on Liana. She felt his arm across her stomach, the heat of him against her back.
All the intimate gestures she once loved from him had now become a minefield she was afraid to tread.
“Elian, do you want this goodbye dinner or not?”
“I do.”
Elian lifted his gaze to her profile. Her skin was still flawless, so much so that he couldn’t resist leaning in to plant a light kiss on her cheek.
But as soon as Liana felt the touch of his lips, she immediately turned her head away.
Elian’s heart stuttered, but then he gave a low chuckle. We’ll cook together.”
So they prepared dinner side by side, and then…
Liana watched as Elian opened a bottle of red wine.
“This is the brand we had the first time. Remember?”
“My stomach hasn’t been good. The doctor told me to avoid alcohol for six months.”
Liana immediately lowered her eyes, just setting out the plates and cutlery.
He said, “A little won’t hurt. Sit.”
Liana stared at the glass of wine he placed before her and took her seat.
At this point, all she could do was roll with it.
After all, he’d seen the ultrasound printout. Or perhap…
She couldn’t help but glance at him again.
Yes, in this moment, she suspected he suspected her.
Especially since a few days ago, when he touched her waist, he’d said she’d gained a little weight.
Though a tiny fetus couldn’t add that much, still…
Liana reached out and subtly slid her wine glass closer into a more comfortable position.
Elian’s sharp gaze noted the movement of her glass before he lowered his eyes to arrange his own place setting.
“It’s been a while since we last had a meal at home together.”
Elian raised his glass to her, speaking casually.
“Mm.”
Liana didn’t elaborate. Seeing his glass raised, she had no choice but to pick up hers, “You do as you please, I’ll just sip, alright?”
