As she lowered her head to eat the soup, Elian took a bit as well. “Tastes good. You haven’t lost your touch.”

Truthfully, it had been a long time since she’d cooked a proper meal. Alone, everything was simpler. But now, she just listened quietly, offering no retort.

“Remember the first time we had chicken noodle soup? You added way too much salt. I thought you were trying to kill me,” he said.

“I didn’t really know how to cook back then.”

“Didn’t know how is an understatement,” Elian teased.

Irritated, Liana looked up at him. “Can we not keep reminiscing?”

“Oh, Mrs. Locke, you’re leaving me, and I’m not even allowed to remember the past?”

“And don’t keep calling me ‘Mrs. Locke.”

Seeing his displeased expression as he leaned back, Liana decided to stop the title altogether.

Elian gave a bitter laugh, then picked up the wine bottle to refill his glass, taking small sips.

Seeing him quiet, Liana returned to her meal.

Once I finish eating, I’m leaving. Lily’s cold isn’t getting any better; her cough is worse. I should go back and make her some warm honey lemon tea.

Elian’s deep eyes were fixed on the gentle curve of her lowered brows.

She always ate slowly, but she hadn’t put down her fork much.

Her appetite seemed good. Was it because…

Elian’s gaze involuntarily drifted downward from her face.

He couldn’t see anything, but he remembered.

Feeling his eyes on her, Liana looked up.

“Elian, I am not pregnant.”

“I’m just getting you another bowl.”

Elian ignored her statement, leaning over to serve her more soup.

Liana was speechless, but she was still hungry.

Watching her lower her head to eat again, Elian remarked, “You never used to have a second helping.”

Liana’s heart skipped a beat. She had to put down her spoon. “I’m done.”

She stood up to leave.

“Sit down.”

His voice was a cold command.

Liana looked at him, perplexed. “We bought the grocenes, cooked the meal. What else is there?”

“There’s plenty. Sit back down.”

Elian was calm and unhurried.

Liana suddenly realized she was being too easily provoked. Forcing herself to sit back down, she picked up her spoon again. “I have to leave after dinner. Lily is sick

“Eat first.”

Elian also settled back into his seat.

He didn’t know when he’d get to eat Liana’s cooking again, so he intended to make the most of this meal.

Finally, the dining room fell quiet.

The exquisite crystal chandelier above sparkled, casting its light over the two of them eating in near silence.

After the meal, Liana stood to clear the table. Elian, holding their two wine glasses and the unfinished bottle in one hand, walked over and took her wrist. “Leave it. The housekeeper will take care of it tomorrow.”

Confused. Liana felt his warm fingers slide from her wrist to take her hand.

Feeling his tight grasp, she couldn’t help but look at him again. “Elian, don’t push your luck.”

Elian laughed at that, pulling her towards the living room.

Liana followed numbly. Of course, she resented it.

Why, even now, do I have to be led by him?

But she ended up sitting on his deep blue leather sofa anyway.

Elian sat beside her, finished the wine left in her glass, then refilled it.

Throughout the entire dinner, she’d only taken that one tiny, polite sip.

He hadn’t pressed her to drink more after that. She thought that was it.

Maybe he’s not entirely unreasonable?

But now…

Elian handed her refilled glass back to her.
