“Don’t be scared. I know how to be gentle. You think Elian didn’t know what would happen to you here? But he didn’t care. He doesn’t cherish you. We’ll cherish you okay?”
“Ptui.”
Liana suddenly spat at him.
“You bitch! Let her legs go! The more she fights, the more I like it!” the leader roared, unbuckling his belt.
A shadow grew larger and larger behind him, until it engulfed his entire back and even covered Liana’s battered face.
Still, no one noticed. And then-
Thwack!
A deafening crack split the air.
The head of the man, choking and trying to assault Liana, jerked violently, blood spraying, and he slumped sideways.
By the time the others processed what happened, police sirens blared outside.
Someone saw their boss, blood streaming from his head, and collapsed in terror.
Another, quicker, scrambled for a discarded knife.
“You came back?! Damn it, you-” Someone’s eyes filled with raw fear at the sight of the returning figure. He tried to run.
But the rusted steel rebar didn’t spare him.
There were so many footsteps, yet they felt far away from her.
“This guy was recording!” someone shouted.
“Damn it!”
“Ahh! Please! Have mercy!”
So many voices, chaotic. But finally, some thin, precious air reached her lungs.
Liana thought she was hallucinating.
She imagined someone had come to save her.
She couldn’t see clearly. It looked like Elian-so tall and imposing, like a legendary hero arriving before her.
“Liana? Liana?”
It sounded like his voice, but she couldn’t hear well. Her neck was raw and red, her face a map of
overlapping bloody marks.
The slaps might have given her a concussion. She wasn’ sure.

She felt something warm wrapping her icy body. The bone-deep chill receded slightly, but she was also gradually losing consciousness.
All the kidnappers were handcuffed.
Elian stood among them, wrapped in a thick, murderous aura. His gaze was dark and bloodthirsty-his overwhelming pressure so intense the whole scene went dead silent.
He gently lifted Liana from the rubble. With cold, disgusted eyes, he looked at the handcuffed, dazed leader, bleeding heavily from his head. His voice was unnervingly calm. “Mr. Kane. You know what to do.”
“Understood.” Liam didn’t dare delay.
Two hours earlier, he’d received Elian’s call. They’d devised a precise plan, coordinated with him, and rushed here with dozens of officers, surrounding the place.
But one glance at the unconscious, brutalized woman in Elian’s arms told Liam they’d been too late.
Knowing Liam wouldn’t fail him, Elian carried Liana out with long, purposeful strides.
When Liana woke again, she thought she was dead.
She was in a car-in Elian’s arms.
He drove with one hand, holding her securely against him.
She could smell his familiar, clean scent. Was her love for him driving her insane?
She couldn’t help but look up at him. Her throat hurt too much to speak, but her vision slowly cleared.
Elian’s gaze was fixed straight ahead. Feeling the woman in his arms stir made his heart clench violently.
He couldn’t bring himself to look again at her bruised, cut face. His eyes held back the storm until it almost broke. The arm holding her tightened unconsciously.
The pain brought Liana fully awake.
She wasn’t dead.
She… had been saved?
He’d gone back for her?
Her eyes grew hot and wet instantly. The thought that he turned around for her made her freeze-did she hate him, or thank him?
“We’re almost at the hospital,” Elian spoke, his own voice rough and dry.
Liana didn’t answer. She rested silently against his chest
It was still as warm as ever. It just didn’t belong to her anymore.
Remembering the cold, detached look in his eyes when he chose Anya, she forced herself to stay calm.
