Liana’s voice was thick, unclear.

The doctor couldn’t make out the words but read her lips. Seeing her raw, red neck, the doctor said, “Don’t be afraid. We live in a society governed by law. Justice catches everyone eventually.”
Liana wanted to laugh, but her face hurt too much.
Elian, standing nearby, heard their exchange clearly.
The examination and ointment application took, nearly an hour. During that time, someone delivered a set of women’s clothes.
“Sit up slowly.” The doctor helped her carefully.
Elian picked up the clothes and stepped forward. “I’ll do it.”
The doctor and assistant glanced at him, uneasy.
“I’m her husband,” Elian stated.
The two women looked to Liana.
Liana just wanted to be clothed. She nodded.
“We’ll be right outside. Call if you need anything.” The medical staff left after the reminder.
“I picked a loose dress. It’ll do for now.” Elian approached, putting one arm around her to support her while he slipped the dress over her head.
Liana’s entire body ached, but she quickly helped get the dress on.
Yes. Finally, some sense of security.
“I…”
“I want to go home.”
They spoke simultaneously. Elian’s words remained unspoken.
The moment she said she wanted to go home, he swallowed what was hard to say and nodded. “Okay.”
Liana added, “To my apartment on Riverview Avenue.”
“I know,” Elian agreed, picked her up from the bed, and carried her out.
The two medical staff watched them leave, still concerned, but knowing they couldn’t interfere in a patient’s personal life.
Liana didn’t speak the whole way. Neither did Elian.
His phone soon rang. On the car’s front screen, the name “Anya” appeared.
Liana reflexively looked at the screen upon hearing the found, then immediately lowered her gaze.

Chapter 26 It Was Close
Elian’s thumb hovered. After a few seconds of hesitation he answered. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah. Elian, did you get Liana out? Was she… hurt?” Anya’s worried voice came through.
Liana’s mind buzzed inexplicably, remembering what Anya had said when she was rescued.
This whole kidnapping…
Anya had been stabbed. Did that cloud her judgment?
“It was close, but she’s safe now. Don’t worry about anything else. Just rest.” Elian’s tone was patient.
But his phrase “it was close” puzzled Liana.
Did he call this “close”?
Of course. He didn’t love her. As long as she was alive, it was “close” to him.

If it had been Anya surrounded and tormented by those men, even if she hadn’t been raped in the end, he’d probably be heartbroken, wouldn’t he?
“I just feel so guilty. I dragged her into this, and you saved me first. Elian, you have to take good care of her. Knowing you’re with her makes me feel a little better.” Anya’s voice was full of remorse.
“Mhm. I’m driving. Talk later.” Sensing the utter detachment from the person beside him-a chill pushing him miles away-Elian ended the call quickly.
“Okay. And Theo-just talk to him every day, please?” Alya added weakly.
“Mm.” Elian hung up and reflexively glanced at the passenger seat.
