Chapter 63 Cold Showers and Drugs

She hadn’t expected the “couch” he meant would be the one inside the bedroom.

Later that night, she suddenly developed a fever, her mind growing fuzzy with discomfort. She started talking in her sleep.

“Mom… Mom, I have a baby…

“Don’t touch me… don’t touch my baby… Elian…”

Liana cried out in her nightmare, jolting awake, her forehead damp with sweat.

As her surroundings came into focus, she instinctively turned toward the source of coolness pressed against her.

“Liana, you’re burning up,” Elian whispered, his voice thick with worry as he held her tightly.

His body, usually so warm, felt chilled.

Liana stared at him in the dim light, silent tears suddenly streaming down her face. “Elian…”

She buried her face in his chest, turning to wrap her arms around him, holding on as if for dear life.

She’d been terrified.

In her dream, the Forrests were trying to snuff out her baby’s life.

“I’m here,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to her hair, his low voice a soothing balm.

It had been so long since she’d called his name with that kind of reliance.

When Liana woke in the morning, a wave of nausea washed over her.

She was alone in bed. She lay still, gazing at the empty space beside her, at the pristine white pillow.

He left?

She remembered the night-the fever coming in waves, the cool relief of a body wrapping around her each time. A dull ache tightened in her chest.

She rarely got sick. The last time was after her mother’s accident, when exhaustion finally

overwhelmed her. This time…

It was from kneeling in the cold rain at the Forrests.

Late September rain was no joke.

Her eyes fell on a box of medicine on the nightstand. Her mind went blank with panic, and she scrambled up fast.

Her thigh throbbed-sharp, unbearable. She remembered that hit from last night, remembered what Sierra said, and Elian applying ointment…

Even so, she dragged her heavy leg over and reached for the box, leaning against the headboard.

Fever reducer, just like she feared.

A cold dread seized her.

Elian walked in from the hall. “You’re awake?”

“Who told you to give me this?” Liana demanded, shaking the box at him, her voice trembling with anger.

“Hmm?”

He was taken aback by her fury.

She hadn’t even been this angry when she’d discovered Theo’s existence.

“What gives you the right to drug me without my permission?” Her eyes were red-rimmed.

“Mrs. Locke, your fever spiked to 103. I tried cold compresses four times, but it kept coming back. I gave you one dose. What’s the problem?”

Elian walked to the bed, looking down at her.

He’d taken four cold showers last night, chilled to the bone before he climbed back under the covers-just to cool her down.

Liana fell silent, fresh tears spilling over.

“You were rambling like crazy last night. If I hadn’t given you that, you might have fried your brain,” he added, his tone factual.

But Liana didn’t want to hear it. She needed to call a doctor.

She threw the covers back, only to find her leg utterly uncooperative.

The helplessness made the tears fall faster.

“It’s Saturday. No school. Stay in bed and rest. Don’t make those four cold showers a total waste, okay?” Elian sat on the edge of the bed, his voice strained.

“I never asked you to take cold showers.”

Liana’s voice was rough and muffled with grief.

“I know. I did it willingly,” he said, his deep eyes locking onto hers.

Liana wasn’t untouched by his care. But any flicker of warmth was instantly extinguished by the reality of his son.

Compared to their two-year marriage, the life growing inside her was now her absolute priority.
