Chapter 64 He Knows

Liana hung up, relieved, and only then noticed she was wearing a silk nightgown.

No need to ask-he must have changed her into it. She didn’t make a fuss. They already had a baby, after all.

What bothered her was his empty promise of divorce with no action.

What bothered her was his selfish scheming and how little he respected women.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Liana looked up. Elian stood leaning against the doorframe, hands in his pockets, his deep eyes unusually soft. “Mrs. Locke, may I come in?”

She remained silent, a tacit permission.

He strode over and sat beside her on the bed. “You’ve taken ibuprofen for fevers before. What was different this time?”

Liana had read too many ugly stories about custody battles. Thinking of those, she kept her voice flat. “My stomach’s been sensitive this year. Ibuprofen is harsh on the gut.”

“Is that so?” Elian watched her intently, recalling her feverish ramblings.

Liana met his gaze. His eyes were filled with clear distrust.

But then, trust had vanished from their relationship long ago.

She looked away. “I-”

The doorbell chimed, cutting off her request to leave.

Elian glanced toward the sound, pulled out his phone, and tapped the smart lock app to let the

visitor in.

“It’s Ms. Kane,” he said, setting his phone down and watching her reaction.

Liana glanced at him, puzzled as always by his formal “Ms. Kane” for his own mother.

Would

my son one day address me like that?

Suddenly, Elian grasped her hand, his gaze piercing. “Liana.”

The way he said her name made her uneasy. She tried to pull away, but his grip tightened.

“Is there something you’re not telling me?” he asked, his voice low.

Downstairs, Linda let herself in and started up the stairs. But Elian’s eyes never left Liana’s face, searching for any flicker of truth.

Liana remembered him saying she’d babbled while feverish last night. Her eyes flew to his. “If I’m keeping something from you, it’s because you have no right to know.”

Even as she said it, her heart began to hammer against her ribs. Her hand twisted in his, trying to break free.

Instead of releasing her, Elian used his hold to pull her closer, his expression turning stern.

“Oh? Does that include my child you’re carrying?”

His eyes grew dangerously cold.

Liana’s breath caught. Did I call out for the baby in my sleep?

“I’m not pregnant.”

“Then you’d better have a damn good explanation for why you kept begging me to save the baby in your dreams last night,” he stated mercilessly.

Liana felt her blood run cold. He knows?

Knock, knock.

A rap landed on the door.

“Liana? How are you feeling, dear?” Linda’s voice came through the door.

Liana silently breathed a sigh of relief. Perfect timing.

“I’m fine now, Linda,” she called out, her voice steady.

Meanwhile, Elian stood up, his face a storm cloud, positioning himself stiffly to the side as Linda entered.

Linda noticed her son’s dark mood but chose to ignore it, gliding over to sit on Liana’s bedside with a warm smile. “Don’t take any chances. I’ll stay and look after you today. It’s been too long since we’ve had a proper chat.”

“Okay,” Liana agreed softly.

She hated troubling an elder, but having Linda here was better than being alone with Elian.

She couldn’t help but glance at him again, only to find his gaze already locked on her.

Those eyes seemed to see straight through her, making her hold her breath.

As Elian watched the panic flash in her eyes, pieces clicked into place with brutal clarity: her odd reaction during the pregnancy test he’d forced on her, her recent nausea, and now her feverish pleas.

How could I have been so blind?

They’d been trying for over two months. There was no medical reason for failure.

The only explanation-

She’d been hiding it from him.

His gaze dropped, involuntarily, to her still-flat abdomen.

His breathing grew shallow.

Was their child really growing there? It would explain the sickness she’d passed off as disgust.

So she hadn’t been so disgusted by him that she puked. And it wasn’t just once or twice-it was

several times.

Feeling his gaze linger on her stomach, Liana stiffened. She feared his suspicion, feared he might drag her to the hospital for another pregnancy test like before.

Suddenly, Elian’s phone buzzed. His eyes snapped up from her stomach, meeting hers with startling intensity.

Liana felt pinned, her heart sinking.

He didn’t miss that flash of panic. But instead of pressing the point, he pulled back, stepped to the bed, and bent to pick up his phone.
