Linda shot her son a disapproving look. “Why even answer her calls? Have you forgotten how coldly she turned you down?”
Elian, however, only glanced briefly at Liana. Seeing her utter indifference to the call, he replied coolly, “She’s back now, isn’t she?”
“Back? She…”
Linda was confused, but before she could gather her thoughts, Elian had already walked out with the phone.
Liana understood perfectly. He was glad Anya was back.
There was no room left in her for more heartache; she even felt a quiet, grim relief.
Good. Let him and Anya settle this quickly. Maybe then the divorce will go through faster.
“That brat, always saying the opposite of what he means. Don’t pay him any mind, dear,” Linda said hurriedly, reaching to feel Liana’s forehead.
Assured the fever was gone, she continued, “David, Rosalind, Earl, and I are all on your side. As long as we’re breathing, we won’t let him divorce you.”
“But I want the divorce,” Liana said softly.
She was deeply grateful for the elders’ affection, but her resolve was ironclad.
“Why? You two were doing great for over two years, weren’t you?”
Before Anya’s return, the elders had never seen the young couple argue and had watched them grow closer.
“He doesn’t love me,” Liana stated, her voice heartbreakingly calm.
“What?” Linda was baffled.
“The day Anya and I were both taken, he chose to save her. Linda, I know you, David, and Grandma and Grandpa all care for me deeply. But I want to step aside. To make way for Elian and Anya.”
Her explanation was delivered with quiet, unwavering sincerity.

Linda’s mind reeled. Elian kept things to himself, but a kidnapping? How could he not have mentioned it?
After Liana fell asleep again, Linda went straight downstairs to the home office.
Elian was finishing a video call. “Two minutes,” he said without looking up.
Linda waited.
He ended the call, turned, and leaned against his desk, his tall frame tense. “Is she asleep?”
“Yes. Elian, I’m asking you one thing-do you want this wife or not?”
Lately, too many whispers spoke of divorce, of her son’s “First Love,” of Anya being the better match.
Linda ignored the gossip. She’d never cared about social status; she valued character and potential.
Anya’s background was impeccable, but her mother had stolen another woman’s husband. That alone made Linda dislike her.
The whole family thought Anya was manipulative, but they’d humored their only son.
When she rejected his proposal, they’d all been secretly relieved.
Later, Elian brought Liana home. The elders were impressed. A quiet investigation revealed she was the daughter of the Mayor, Lawrence, and his ex-wife-cautious, considerate, low-key. Though currently just a middle school teacher, her potential was vast. Even if her own family couldn’t help her, the Lockes could elevate her within years.
Then Anya returned, threatening everything.
“What I want is irrelevant. She doesn’t want this marriage anymore,” Elian said, his and troubled as he looked out the window.
“And why would she want it? You lied to her from the start.”
Linda’s heart ached for her son’s obvious distress, but she couldn’t let that slide.
Elian was speechless.
gaze distant
“What woman, after over two years of marriage, discovers her husband has had a child all along and wouldn’t want a divorce? And then you flaunt Anya and Theo everywhere, with no regard for her feelings? If it were me, I’d divorce you if it were the last thing I did.”
Linda spelled it out, forcing him to see Liana’s perspective.
