Elian nodded, then a sly smile flickered in his eyes as he said under his breath, “Fine by me. I’m out of options. Just don’t regret it.”
“Regret what?” Linda asked, puzzled.
“Oh, just losing a grandchild, that’s all.”
Elian’s tone was deliberately casual, as if the divorce itself meant nothing to him.
Linda’s mind went blank for a second before joy erupted within her.
She hurried to him and asked carefully, “Are you serious? Liana’s pregnant?”
“After the divorce, the child stays with her. It’ll have nothing to do with our Locke family.”
Elian watched his mother’s excitement, replying with deliberate slowness.
“You idiot! She’s pregnant and you’re talking about divorce?”
Linda smacked his shoulder, her usual composure shattered by irrepressible delight.
“I promised her a divorce. Unless…”
“Unless what?” Linda pressed.
Elian held his mother’s gaze for a few long seconds. Then he pulled open a desk drawer, took out a document, and placed it on the desk. “Unless the marriage certificate is missing.”
Linda stared, then quickly understood. She scooped it up and tucked it into her pocket. “Your grandmother ordered me to take this.”
“Thanks to you and Grandma, it seems our little family might hold together a while longer.”
With the certificate safely hidden, some of the tension eased from Elian’s shoulders,
“How far along is she? How did we not know?” Now that her son was cooperating, Linda was all business about her grandchild.
“I’m not sure yet. But I’d guess around two months.”
Elian thought of that phone call from Liana. He now suspected that was when she’d found out.

They pieced together the clues. Then Linda immediately called a head of obstetrics, an old friend.
“Yes, she came in for a check-up. She is pregnant,” the head of obstetrics said. Liana had seen her before for pre-conception checks.
“Something this big and you didn’t tell me sooner?” Linda was thrilled but also slightly miffed.
“I meant to, but Liana said she wanted to surprise you all.”
“Which date was the appointment?” Elian’s low voice cut in.
Linda had put the call on speaker. The head of obstetrics checked her records. “Last month. The 27th.”
Elian went still. That was the day.
While Linda was still on the phone, Elian was already heading upstairs.
Liana drifted in a heavy sleep until a sudden sense of oppressive darkness made her slowly open her eyes.
Elian sat beside the bed in a crisp white shirt, watching her intently.
For a moment, she couldn’t tell dream from reality. Then her heart began to hammer.
His expression was inscrutable.
The massive bedroom was so silent she could hear her own pulse,
She was fully awake now. This was no dream.
“Why did
you hide the pregnancy?” he asked, his voice deadly serious.
She could see in his eyes that he’d already verified it. The doctor was his mother’s contact; of course he’d found out.
She’d had time to think after breakfast and now faced his interrogation with chilling calm.
“Because that was precisely when I discovered you already had a child elsewhere,” Liana answered without flinching.
Elian’s hands clenched, his deep eyes fixed on her. “How… brutally honest of you.”
“You could find out I was pregnant but not that I had an abortion?” Liana asked quietly, her gaze

“What?”
His eyes narrowed to slits.
